What goes in the green bin? Egg cartons do!

Egg cartons are made from recycled, low-grade paper and cardboard and provide a good source of carbon - an important component of quality compost.

In your green bin, egg cartons will help to absorb moisture and smells. You can even use them as a liner for the bottom of your bin to prevent food and garden organics from getting stuck.

And if you ever get home from doing your grocery shopping only to realise that one of the eggs has cracked inside the carton, the cracked egg and shell can also be placed in the green bin.

South Australians: your recycling is NOT going to landfill.

This is the same stockpile of waste The Advertiser reported on last year, which was known to be very low quality, unsorted mixed materials (stinky milk cartons, rotting newspaper, dirty plastics) and being stored improperly by a recycling company as they were going bankrupt. That company is no longer in business in South Australia.

The laws in relation to recycling are that once it's collected from residents in their yellow bins, it is then illegal to take it straight to landfill - an attempt must be made to recover and recycle. Unfortunately, the materials had degraded into putrescible waste months ago. It’s only just now that it’s been approved by the regulator to go to landfill, which is a long and complex process precisely because of the laws which make it difficult to send collected recyclables to landfill.

Here are the facts:

- this was a small amount of recycling, several thousand tonnes - in context, South Australia diverts 4.5 million tonnes of waste from landfill EVERY year

- this material was poorly collected and poorly stored by a company that is now out of business

- an expert assessed the chance of recovering any of the material as zero

- it was then agreed this backlog of mixed, degraded material should go to landfill, and the owners of the shipping containers could finally get their assets back

- this is not still happening, it was an isolated incident that was made known a year ago

- your recycling is NOT going to landfill.
