📻 Yes, a battery-powered radio. No, we're not joking.

Yeah we know, it's giving "dad's garage shelf circa 1998” vibes…

But when severe weather hits, power and mobile networks can drop out without warning. That means no internet, no apps, no updates. Your phone is a useless brick!

A battery-powered radio connects you to official warnings and emergency information when everything else goes down.

Simple. Reliable. Works when you need it most.

To keep yours ready to go:
✔️ Check it works at least once a year
✔️ Keep spare batteries handy

Do you know why cyclones spin clockwise in Australia? 🌪️

This happens due to the Earth’s rotation! The Coriolis effect makes cyclones rotate clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere - the opposite of hurricanes and typhoons in the Northern Hemisphere, which spin counterclockwise.

But no matter which way they turn, cyclones can be destructive - Queenslanders know this better than most. We’ve faced some powerful ones over the years, from Cyclone Mahina in the late 1800s to Cyclone Narelle earlier this year.

Do you know your cyclone risk? 🌧️

🌊🏡 The Hinchinbrook floods tested everything - except community spirit.

When the floodwater rose, locals rose to the test: checking in, sharing what they had, and standing strong together.

This picture is worth way more than 1,000 words 📸

It's the impactful photo that won top prize at Queensland's 2025 Resilient Australia Awards!

Captured by drone, the photo tells the incredible story of resilience and dedication to keep Queenslanders moving. Taken by Geovert's Adel Namehi, it highlights emergency night infrastructure stabilisation works on a disaster-damaged road in the Cairns region.

This incredibly hardworking crew worked long nights and through wet weather to restore access for locals.

Do you have a photo that captures the spirit of resilience in action? Don't leave it sitting idle on a hard drive collecting dust - submit your image for the 2026 Resilient Australia Awards.

👉 Submit your application now: www.aidr.org.au/raa

Applications close Thursday 11 June.

🥶 Winter is well and truly here Queensland, but it won't last forever!

Some of the coldest temperatures this week have been recorded across the Granite Belt, with parts of Stanthorpe and Applethorpe dropping close to 0°C overnight.

While the Granite Belt often steals the spotlight during winter, many regional Queensland communities have also experienced frosty mornings and near-freezing temperatures over the past week.

Now is the perfect time to Get Ready for the next severe weather season by doing quick tasks like clearing your gutters, updating your emergency kit or checking your insurance policy.

📸 Thanks to Nyssa from Stanthorpe for sharing these stunning frosty morning photos.
