We regulate compulsory third party (CTP) insurance in Queensland. This is an official Queensland Government account for the Motor Accident Insurance Commission.

MAIC is responsible for regulating and improving Queensland’s Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance scheme and managing the Motor Accident Insurance and Nominal Defendant funds. We are responsible for:

- ensuring people injured in road accidents receive fair compensation;
- compensating people who are injured

as a result of the negligent driving of an unidentified or uninsured motor vehicle through the Nominal Defendant;
- ensuring Queensland motorists receive affordable premiums;
- the regulation of insurers’ activity and compliance; and
- meeting any claim costs of an insolvent insurer. MAIC’s key functions involve:

- the licensing and supervision of CTP insurers;
monitoring the operation of the scheme;
- fixing the range within which each insurer’s premium must fall and recommending to Government the levies payable;
- promoting research, education and the infrastructure to reduce the number of motor vehicle crashes and facilitate rehabilitation of injured people;
- developing and maintaining a claims register and statistical database for the purpose of providing management information; and administering the Nominal Defendant Fund.

🚦 It’s Queensland Road Safety Week — a timely reminder that every decision on the road matters.

🔎 MAIC’s Research Team provided an update on key initiatives being supported through MAIC’s research and education program, including work focused on young drivers, rear-end crashes, motorcyclist safety and impaired driving.

In 2025, there were 1,314 road fatalities across Australia, including 306 deaths on Queensland roads — the highest Queensland road toll in more than 10 years.

Through long-term partnerships and research investment, MAIC is helping to reduce crashes, improve safety outcomes and minimise the impact of road trauma across Queensland to contribute to a viable and affordable Queensland CTP scheme. Thank you to Professor Kerry Armstrong and Peter Flanders from MAIC/UniSC Road Safety Research Collaboration for speaking.

Transport and Main Roads Queensland’ free Ready for the Road workshops are helping parents, carers, and supervisors across Queensland support their learner drivers through the journey from L to P.

The workshop shares practical advice, useful strategies and real-life examples to help learners become safer, more confident drivers well beyond the driving test.

With young drivers over-represented in serious crashes on Queensland roads, MAIC is proud to support initiatives like this that promote safer driving behaviours from the very start (plus, you’ll get valuable insights into CTP).

When should you keep left when driving? ⬅️

On multi-lane roads, if the posted speed limit is 90km/h or more, or if the road has a ‘keep left unless overtaking’ sign, you must not drive in the right-hand lane unless you are:
🚘 overtaking
🚘 turning right
🚘 making a U-turn
🚘 avoiding an obstruction
🚘 driving in congested traffic
🚘 using a special purpose lane that you are allowed to be in.

💡 Giving way when at intersections, roundabouts, changing lanes, and turning

In the images below, who should give way?

Answers:
1️⃣ Car A – before making a U-turn at an intersection, you need to give way to all vehicles (including those in slip lanes)
2️⃣ Green car – when entering a roundabout, you need to give way to all vehicles on the roundabout
3️⃣ Car A – you must give way to all road users in the lane you’re moving into when changing lanes
4️⃣ Green car – when turning into a road, you need to give way to people walking or riding across the road
