Tact is telling the truth in a kind and thoughtful way. It means thinking about how your words might affect others before you speak.
As part of the Getting Along key, tact reminds us to pause, reflect, and choose our words carefully.
“Step with care and great tact and remember that life’s a great balancing act.”
— Dr. Seuss
Before you speak, take a moment to consider:
Is it kind? Is it helpful? Is it the right time?
Being tactful means being sensitive to others and choosing words that are gentle, respectful, and constructive.
Say this:
“I act with tact. I think before I speak. I tell the truth kindly and gently.”
