With a month to go until the election the polls are tightening. On a two party preferred basis Labour hold the lead in Victoria, Western Australia, the Northern Territory, the ACT and Tasmania. The liberal party holds onto Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia. Not surprisingly the biggest lead for the LNP comes from the sunshine state where it holds a margin of 6.6% despite the presence of Labour state government. [ 32 more words. ]

According to the latest Newspoll results, Malcolm Turnbull is still Australia's "Preferred Prime Minister" at 46%, compared to Bill Shorten's 31%. But for how much longer? Within the span of less than 1 year, the opposition leader has managed to close the gap from 34 to just 15 percentage points. Arguably, this shift in preference probably has more to do with the blunders of Malcolm Turnbull and the Liberal party, rather than any real improvement with the opposition. [ 30 more words. ]

As of the 31 of March 2016, there are a total of 1,679 people held in Australian immigration detention centres. Adult males make up over 89.5% of this population, while Adult females and children make up the remaining 10.5%. In 2015, costs related to the operation of these detention centres and their detainee reached over $1.335 Billion. Using the 2015 population figures on the 31 of January (1,974 detainees), this equates to a cost of roughly $676,000 per detainee, or over 8.6 times the average full-time salary of an Australian Citizen ($78 000).
