Residential and Commercial property damage caused by fires is well over $500 million AUD every year.

Why the changes to smoke alarm requirements in Queensland?

As per the Australian Government's published statistics:

"In 2013–14, Australian fire agencies attended 101,867 fire related incidents, of which 19,524 (19 per cent) involved structure fires... in 2013–14 no smoke alarm was present in 12,000 (31 per cent) of dwelling fires while a smoke alarm was present but did not operate in 19 per cent of fires."

Combined that is 50% of fires in dwellings having no smoke alarm or inactive alarms.

In Queensland alone, the QFR (Queensland Fire and Rescue) attends on average over 2400 structural fires PER YEAR, and that number is increasing annually.

As per the QLD Fire and Emergency Services Department:

"Old ionisation smoke alarms can be slow to react, and may not give you or your loved ones enough time to escape.

That's why there's new legislation to install photoelectric smoke alarms, which have been proven to be more effective in the domestic home.

The new smoke alarm rules in Queensland specifies that all dwellings (rented or owned) will be required to have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in all bedrooms, in hallways that connect bedrooms with the rest of the dwelling and on every level.

The timeline for compliance is as follows:

- From 1 January 2017: in all new dwellings and substantially renovated dwellings (this applies to building applications submitted from 1 January 2017).

- From 1 January 2022: in all domestic dwellings leased and sold.

- From 1 January 2027: in all other domestic dwellings.
