Thinking about renovating your home?
If your building or renovation project is worth more than $3,300, Queensland law requires it to be covered by the Queensland Home Warranty Scheme (QHWS).
The QHWS provides important protections for homeowners, so it's worth understanding what's covered before signing a contract or starting work.
✅ Check your contractor is QBCC licensed and the work is in scope of the licence
✅ Confirm if your residential project is eligible for QHWS cover
✅ Learn what protections are available to you

The Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) has published its Compliance and Enforcement Strategy 2026–2030.

The Strategy sets out a fair, prevention-focused and intelligence-led approach to supporting compliance, verifying standards and taking proportionate action where required. Informed by input from industry associations, stakeholders and regulatory partners, it reflects a shared commitment to reducing harm and building confidence in Queensland's building system.

Tradies National Health Month may be ending, but the check-ins don't have to.

Building or renovating for the first time? Terms like 'variations', 'progress payments', and 'defects' can feel like a whole new language.

Recent research found that almost half of Queensland home owners going through a building project are first-timers. With 39% experiencing at least one issue along the way.

Good news! Most of these issues are avoidable. To help guide you, we created the Home Owner Hub. It brings together guides, checklists, and step-by-step information to help you understand contracts, check licences, know your rights under the QHWS, and figure out who’s responsible for what.

Notice something not quite right with your build?
Let's talk about 'structural defects'.

Structural defective building work means building work (excluding residential construction work that causes subsidence) that is considered defective because it is faulty or unsatisfactory and results in one or more of the following:
➡️ It affects the structural performance of a building
➡️ It affects the health or safety of a person living in or occupying a building
➡️ It affects the function of a building
➡️ It allows water to enter into a building i.e. roof leak

Over the past 12 months, we've spoken with hundreds of stakeholders at over 90 meetings with home owners, tradies and industry bodies to ask one question - 'how can we do better?' Your response - you want greater consistency, responsiveness, transparency and better ways to work with us.

Here are a few things that we have improved as a result:
➡️ Resolution of complaints on first contact has improved from around 7% to 20% in six months
➡️ The Mediation and Conciliation service has been expanded, with agreement reached for around 70% of mediated matters in an average of 32 days.
➡️ More than 120,000 people have visited our Home Owner Hub since launching late last year, helping Queenslanders know what to consider when building and renovating
➡️ More than 610,000 licence searches have been conducted to help ensure licenced trades people are undertaking work.

We've also expanded our use of data and technology, including heat-mapping tools that help us target education, support compliance and protect consumers where it's needed most. We have focussed on greater contractor accountability, enabling digital licence offerings, enabling more digital submissions instead of only hard copies and owner builder permits can now be lodged via the QBCC Portal.

While there's more work to do, we're committed to continuing to improve our services and delivering better outcomes for Queenslanders.

🔨 Building or renovating?
The Queensland Home Warranty Scheme (QHWS) provides compulsory government financial protection for Queenslanders undertaking eligible residential construction work.
It is:
✅ included in your contract price
✅ paid to us by your QBCC-licensed contractor
✅ different from home and contents insurance

The QHWS covers the home owner for loss if something goes wrong during the build (6 months to 6.5 years depending on the situation).

Make sure you also lodge any claim in time i.e. 3 months from finding a structural defect during the life of the scheme. You contract dates trigger coverage periods.
