The rising cost of living is changing what hardship looks like across Australia. Rent, groceries and power bills are climbing - and for many, the pathway between stability and doing it tough is shortening.

Our Orange Sky 2025 commissioned data shows 35% of Australians have experienced elements of homelessness in the past year. For some, that means staying somewhere temporary. For others, it’s skipping meals or bills to make ends meet. 28% have had to dip into savings just to get by and 10% said they felt too embarrassed to ask for help.

These stories remind us that anyone can find themselves doing it tough - and that connection, care and conversation matter more than ever 🧡

Did you know if a friendship passes the six year mark, it will likely last a lifetime? Well, we’re pretty chuffed to say our mates at Bank of Queensland - BOQ have been in our corner for six years and counting!

From bake sales, trivia nights and volunteering, to championing Orange Sky July - an annual campaign run by the BOQ team to bring their people together, raise funds and support our work - BOQ have consistently found ways to show up for Orange Sky and the people we support.

"Orange Sky July is a highlight of our year. Our people rally together, fundraising, volunteering and turning our branches orange in support of a cause that matters. We’re proud to support an organisation that delivers vital services to people who need them the most", says BOQ Group Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Rod Finch.

It’s this kind of support that makes a partnership so special. It’s not just about signing on the dotted line - it’s about people getting involved and rolling up their sleeves to help make a difference (plus having a bit of fun along the way!).

Ever wondered why we’re called Orange Sky?

It all started with a song. When Nic and Lucas were dreaming up a name for their mobile laundry service, they kept coming back to Orange Sky by Alexi Murdoch - a track about standing together under one sky, supporting one another through whatever life brings. That message of unity and looking out for each other felt right. So they carried it forward in the name Orange Sky. (A fun bonus… they were also co-captains of the orange house in school, so the colour already felt like home.)

Today, the name still reflects what happens on every shift: people coming together, connecting, helping one another in simple, human ways.

All under one orange sky 🧡

Did you know we operate in some of Australia's most remote communities? And, we’ve just launched our 28th remote service in Amanbidji! Check out our last slide to see exactly where that is 👀

In partnership with Katherine West Health Board, we've been able to provide free laundry facilities to residents in four remote communities in the Northern Territory this year... plus now Amanbidji!

As of the beginning of August, local residents can access an Orange Sky Laundry Pod: a fixed space with free laundry facilities and, just as importantly, a welcoming place for a good yarn. Unlike our mobile vans and trucks, laundry pods stay in one place, creating a consistent and accessible service for the community.

And there’s more. We’re working alongside the Amanbidji community to create local employment opportunities, supporting residents to join the team and run the pod themselves.

We're incredibly grateful to work alongside KWHB and the community as we expand our reach and bring these vital services to more remote locations across the country 🧡

Our team visited Gulkula ceremonial site for Garma Festival earlier this month - a powerful reminder of what it means to listen, learn and walk alongside community.

Under this year’s theme of Bukmak (everyone) - a call for unity and collective strength - the conversations brought important clarity to how we approach our work in remote communities.

For Orange Sky, we know lasting wellbeing and equity cannot be designed from afar. They need to be shaped by community, grounded in culture and led by local voices.

A few reflections we’re carrying forward:

✨ Meaningful change starts with listening, learning and truth-telling.
✨ Education and employment can create pathways to opportunity, but local choice and cultural authority must remain at the centre.
✨ Communities should be decision-makers in the changes that affect them - not simply participants in someone else’s plan.
✨ Reflection gives us direction. Our responsibility is to turn that learning into practical, future-focused action.

At Orange Sky, our role is to support local change by listening, learning and creating space for community to lead. Because when communities have the voice, choice and authority to shape their own futures, real change can follow.

For CC, one of the hardest parts of experiencing homelessness wasn't just finding a safe place to sleep, it was feeling isolated from the world around her.

When she was just 14, CC felt the need to leave home. With nowhere to turn, she found herself sleeping under a bridge.

Today, with a safe place to call home and a family of her own, CC volunteers with Orange Sky, helping create those same moments of kindness and connection for others.

"Everybody needs somebody. Human connection is a necessity in life, we weren't put here to be alone", says CC.

For many people, those conversations become just as valuable as clean clothes and a warm shower.
