📢 IMPORTANT SAFETY MESSAGE – ASBESTOS AWARENESS AFTER SEVERE WEATHER

Following the recent severe weather, many homes and structures have suffered damage. If your roof, walls, sheds, fences, or any building materials containing asbestos have been impacted, please read carefully:

⚠️ The SES is unable to assist with asbestos-related damage.
Asbestos can pose a serious health risk when disturbed. For your safety and the safety of our volunteers, SES crews cannot complete temporary repairs, tarping, or make-safes on:
Damaged asbestos roofs
Broken or exposed asbestos sheeting
Structures suspected of containing asbestos

✔️ What you should do
If you suspect asbestos is present:
Do not touch, move, or attempt to repair the material yourself.
Keep people and pets away from the area.
Contact a licensed asbestos removalist or qualified roofing/building professional to assess and safely manage the damage.

Follow advice from your local council, state health authority, or insurance provider for next steps.

Got a damaged skylight and rain on the way?

A sturdy large umbrella can work as a temporary cover — just anchor it from the inside (hang something heavy) to prevent it from lifting in the wind.

It’s not a long-term fix, but it can help reduce water ingress until proper repairs can be arranged.

Asbestos Roof Safety

Severe weather damage can be stressful, but please don’t climb onto an asbestos roof to make your own repairs. The risk to your safety and health far outweighs any quick fix.

If your roof is damaged, keep clear of the area and contact your insurer or qualified professionals who are certified to work with asbestos. Our SES volunteers are also unable to access an asbestos roof, but we can give you a hand moving your furniture or cover it with black plastic to protect from roof leaks until the professionals can take a look. Call 132500 or use the SES app.

Your safety and the safety of our vollys is always the priority.

🌧️ SES crews have been inundated with requests for assistance and with more storm activity forecast today, here’s how to make do until repairs arrive ⛑️

If your skylight’s been damaged and rain is getting in — here are some steps to help protect your home:
🔶 Stay safe first – Carefully clean up damaged glass and avoid climbing on wet or unstable roofs.
🔶Contain the leak – Place buckets, tubs, or towels to catch drips and reduce water damage.
🔶 Create a temporary cover – If it’s safe to do so, cover the skylight with a tarp or even an umbrella from the inside (it will need to be tied down)
🔶 Document the damage – Take photos for insurance before making any temporary fixes.

☎If you need SES assistance call 132 500 or use the SES Assistance App. In a life-threatening emergency contact Triple Zero (000) immediately.

No longer need the SES? Please cancel your request so our volunteers can focus on those who still need help.

A severe weather warning remains in place for heavy rainfall across south east Queensland.

With the ground already saturated, there is an increased risk of flash flooding.

Today is not the day to be on the roads, or sight seeing around rivers or catchments.

Please stay safe out there, ensure you monitor warnings issued by the Bureau of Meteorology and remember; if it’s flooded, forget it.
