Happy Queensland Day!

On this day in 1859, Queen Victoria signed the Letters Patent (pictured), approving Queensland to become a separate colony to New South Wales. This enabled Queensland to have its own representative government.

A century of Queensland weather changed the face of Parliament House.
When Parliament House was designed in 1864, architect Charles Tiffin incorporated bold stone features on top of the George and Alice St wings.
Although these features emphasised and enlivened the corners of the building, they were removed in 1966 as the stone had weathered and become unsafe.
Join a public tour to see the surviving original stoneworks and discover many more stories hidden within Parliament House.

Parliament House recently exchanged debates for deep breaths as the Speaker's Green became the setting for an early morning chair yoga session ahead of International Day of Yoga on 21 June. 🧘‍♀️
Hosted by the Consulate General of India in Brisbane, the event brought together Members of Parliament and representatives from communities across Queensland to celebrate the universal appeal of yoga and its contribution to health and wellbeing.
This year's theme, Yoga for Healthy Ageing, highlights the benefits of yoga in supporting physical and mental wellbeing at every stage of life.
It was a great opportunity to stretch our minds, find our balance and take a moment to reflect on the positive role yoga can play in our communities.
Thank you to the Consulate General of India and all those who attended this special event at Queensland Parliament.

Question Time can be full of energy, debate and the occasional dramatic moment.
But even in the most lively exchanges, there are rules designed to help keep things in order.
In the Queensland Parliament, comments are directed through the Speaker, or Deputy Speaker, rather than directly at another Member.
This Westminster tradition is one of the ways parliamentary procedure tries to tone down direct personal exchanges, helping keep debate focused and the Chamber in order, even during the drama of Question Time.

Hockey was in the spotlight at Queensland Parliament yesterday. 🏑
The Parliamentary Friends of Hockey event brought together Members and representatives from across the hockey community to recognise the sport's contribution to communities throughout Queensland.
With more than 17,000 registered participants, hockey continues to create opportunities for Queenslanders to participate in sport at all levels.
Queensland Parliament was pleased to welcome Hockey Queensland, the Brisbane Blaze, athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers to the Speaker’s Green.

On Mabo Day, we honour Eddie Koiki Mabo, from Mer (Murray Island), who fought to overturn the idea that Australia was 'land belonging to no one'.
On 3 June 1992, the High Court of Australia handed down the landmark decision in Mabo and others v Queensland (No 2) (1992).
The decision meant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' rights and interests to the land were recognised, for the first time – rights that existed before the British arrived and can still exist today.
The Australian Parliament passed the Native Title Act (Cth) 1993 the following year to create a legal framework to determine how native title interests are formally recognised and recorded.
During National Reconciliation Week, Mabo Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the importance of recognition, respect, and the ongoing journey towards reconciliation between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians.

This sitting week, two more artworks from Queensland Parliament’s Regional Council Artwork Collection are taking pride of place in the Chamber.

Originally assembled in 1979 to mark the completion of the Parliamentary Annexe, the collection celebrates Queensland’s regions through works donated by local councils and created by artists from across the state.

- Esk War Memorial and [Mount] Glen Rock by Myrtle Herman was donated by the former Esk Shire Council. A self-taught artist, Mrs Herman began painting while working as a nurse and went on to exhibit and sell her work throughout Australia and overseas.

- Council Chambers Old and New by Denis Glindemann was donated by the former Albert Shire Council. Mr Glindemann began painting at just 13 years of age and developed a lifelong passion for art.

Together, these works capture local stories, landmarks and communities, reflecting the diverse regions represented in Queensland’s Parliament.

Explore the artworks featured in the Chamber through our Online Heritage Collection, with new additions published each sitting week. https://loom.ly/1XN40M0
