In Loving Memory 🤍🕊️
On 3 March 1969, George and Sandra Georgiou purchased C. Lucas & Co., a business established in 1935. Together, they built a thriving enterprise that supplied the wedding industry, dressmakers, dancers, and the film and music industries. George was a true innovator, becoming one of the first to sell individual hang-sell packets to major retailers such as Myer, Gardams, and many other haberdashery stores throughout Australia.
George perfected the art of pearl knotting and the rethreading of necklaces and bracelets, providing his expertise to jewellers across Brisbane and Queensland. He travelled extensively throughout Queensland, building relationships and growing the business. Upon returning from his trips, he would often find his staff busy packing orders while he moved effortlessly between serving customers and supporting the local business.
For many years, George successfully operated both businesses, with his daughter working alongside him. As the business continued to grow, his son joined the company to manage and run what became known as Bead Trimming and Craft Co., allowing George to devote more of his time to what he loved most—his cherished Doll and Teddy Hospital.
His passion for restoring treasured dolls, teddy bears, prams, rocking horses, and countless other beloved items was unmatched. No challenge was ever too great. Every repair was undertaken with care, patience, and genuine dedication. His greatest joy came from seeing the smiles on the faces of both children and adults when a treasured possession was returned to them, lovingly restored. Through his work, he helped preserve precious memories, create new ones, and ensure that family heirlooms could be passed down through generations.
George's kindness, warmth, and sincerity touched everyone he met. His heart was as genuine as his smile.
His life was a testament to hard work, determination, and perseverance. Arriving in Australia from Cyprus at the age of five as the eldest of six children, George learned the value of hard work from an early age. He worked alongside his father, a cabinet maker, and later helped in the family's general store, selling records and a variety of other goods. At the beginning of his journey, he knew little about beads, yet through dedication and vision, he built one of the largest bead and trimming businesses in Australia. Today, it proudly remains the oldest bead and trimming store in the country.
George was taught the fundamentals of doll restoration and went on to master the craft, developing the skills to undertake repairs ranging from the simplest to the most complex. His expertise became widely respected, and his reputation spread far and wide.
Sadly, we have lost the patriarch of our family and our business. His quirky sayings, infectious smile, wisdom, and countless memories will remain with us forever.
Today, his legacy lives on. The business continues to be family-owned and operated, now in its third generation, supported by an incredible team of dedicated people who share his passion. Together, we will continue his life's work—restoring and preserving cherished memories through dolls, teddies, and treasured toys, while also bringing creativity and sparkle to the world through beads and trimmings.
Our hearts are broken, but his memory will live on in everything we do. We will continue to honour his passion, preserve the memories entrusted to us, and care for every treasured item just as he would have wanted.
Forever in our hearts.
George Georgiou
