🖤💛❤️ Central Queensland - this year we celebrated NAIDOC Week by attending three community events across the region, including Yeppoon, Rockhampton and Blackwater!

These events provided valuable opportunities for our team to connect with community members, stakeholders and local organisations, while raising awareness of the supports and services available through Carers Queensland.

📍 In Yeppoon, staff attended as guests and took the opportunity to connect with community members and stakeholders before the march began. It was wonderful to meet people, share information about our services, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere as the march arrived. Staff also visited community stalls throughout the day, spoke with attendees about the support available for carers, and encouraged participation in surveys to help us better understand local needs. The event featured cultural dancing and speeches from community leaders, creating a meaningful celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

📍 In Rockhampton, 11 staff proudly represented Carers Queensland in the community march, joining local organisations and community members in recognising the significance of NAIDOC Week. The event opened with a Welcome and Acknowledgement of Country and included powerful cultural performances from the Gurridalla Dancers and Warama Culture Dancers. While the march was underway, our team set up the Carers Queensland marquee, creating a welcoming space for visitors to learn more about our services, connect with staff and access information. The day also provided a great opportunity to strengthen relationships with community organisations and service providers across the region.

📍 In Blackwater, staff connected with local stakeholders, community groups, families and schools, building new relationships and strengthening existing partnerships. The event attracted many local families and school-aged children, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere. Our Carers Queensland giveaway bags were a big hit with the kids and helped draw visitors to the stall, providing more opportunities to engage with the community and share information about the supports available to carers throughout the region.

❤️ Thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat, shared their stories, and helped make these celebrations so special. We are proud to stand alongside our communities in celebrating the rich histories, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

🏅 Congratulations to Hani Watson on winning Australia's first medal at Glasgow 2026!

With an emotional bronze medal in Para powerlifting, Hani has become the first Australian Para powerlifter to win two Commonwealth medals. Her achievement is a powerful example of determination, resilience and the importance of inclusive sport 👉 https://zurl.co/mJUzs

We were proud to interview Hani during the 2024 Paralympic Games, where she shared her journey as Australia's first female para powerlifter in more than a decade and how she overcame significant challenges to reach the world stage.

As advocates for inclusive sport, we celebrate athletes like Hani who inspire others and show that everyone deserves the opportunity to participate, compete and succeed. We also created an Inclusive Sport and Recreation Resource to help people, clubs and communities get started in making sport more welcoming and accessible for everyone.

A career in medicine has long been the goal of Anna Dang, and while being born legally blind might impact exaclty what that looks like, she's excited about the chance to pursue her dream.

With the support of Deakin University (and Seeing Eye Dog Kylie by her side), Anna's a great example of how people who are blind or have low vision can overcome the limits placed on them by others.
