The British Ex-Services Association Queensland was formed for the benefit of all ex-servicemen and servicewomen who have served in the British Armed Forces and Mercantile Marine.

Operation Southern Watch saw British forces work alongside the United States to enforce the no-fly zone over southern Iraq from 1992 to 2003. Royal Air Force aircraft conducted regular patrols, deterred Iraqi air defences, and helped protect the Shiite population while maintaining regional stability in the aftermath of the Gulf War.

Operation Banner was the operational name for the British Armed Forces’ deployment in Northern Ireland from August 14, 1969, to July 31, 2007. It was the longest continuous deployment in British military history, established to support local police, maintain internal security, and counter paramilitary groups during the period known as the Troubles.

Operation Shader is the UK’s contribution to the international coalition against ISIS. Since August 2014, British forces have carried out precision air strikes, intelligence and surveillance missions, aerial refuelling, humanitarian support, and trained Iraqi and Kurdish security forces, playing a key role in helping defeat ISIS’s territorial caliphate while continuing efforts to prevent its return. 🇬🇧⚔️

August 1990. 🇬🇧

As Iraq occupied Kuwait, Britain responded at speed. RAF Tornado F3s, Jaguars, Nimrods, RAF Regiment personnel, communications teams, air movements specialists, and Royal Navy ships deployed to secure the skies, support coalition forces, and enforce the embargo.

Before the armoured brigades arrived, these were the first faces of Operation Granby.

Operation Highbrow (2006) was the UK’s largest evacuation since Dunkirk. As conflict engulfed Lebanon, Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary ships, supported by British Army and RAF personnel, safely evacuated more than 4,600 British nationals and thousands of other foreign citizens. It was a remarkable humanitarian mission, demonstrating the British Armed Forces’ ability to deliver hope, protection and safe passage when it mattered most.

The ability to get on with the job. To look after the people around you. To step forward when something needs doing.

Whether it’s raising a family, helping a mate, volunteering in the community, or simply being there when someone needs support, veterans continue to serve in ways that often go unnoticed.

At BESA Queensland, we bring veterans together because staying connected matters. It’s about friendship, shared experiences, a bit of banter, and knowing there are people around you who understand where you’ve been and what you’ve carried.

The service may be in the past.

🇬🇧 BESA Remembers – Operation HERRICK 🇬🇧

Operation HERRICK was the codename for all British military operations in Afghanistan from 20 June 2002 to 12 December 2014.

The operation formed the United Kingdom’s contribution to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and the American-led Operation Enduring Freedom. Over more than a decade of service, British personnel operated in some of the most demanding and dangerous conditions faced by our Armed Forces in recent times.

The campaign came at a heavy cost. 457 British servicemen and women lost their lives, while thousands more returned home carrying the physical and psychological scars of war.

Today, BESA remembers those who made the ultimate sacrifice, those who were wounded, and all who served during Operation HERRICK. Their courage, professionalism, and dedication will never be forgotten.

On 9 June 1999, 1 PARA Battle Group, reinforced by 3 PARA, spearheaded NATO’s KFOR entry into Kosovo. Conducting an air-mobile assault into the Kacanik Defile on the Serbian border, British paratroopers secured key terrain before advancing towards Pristina to support peacekeeping operations and the withdrawal of Serb forces.

A defining moment for 5 Airborne Brigade and British airborne forces.
