Every year at Redcliffe Hospital, thousands of elective and emergency surgeries take place across the seven theatres, with Clinical Nurse Vanessa keeping them all on schedule.🕰️🏥

Vanessa has worked at Redcliffe for 20 years, with the theatre bookings space providing her a chance to help patients with their concerns during what can be a difficult time.

"We cover lots of areas, we organise both elective and emergency surgeries as well as outsourcing for Surgery Connect patients," Vanessa said.

"We can assist people with inter-hospital transfers, confirmation calls, any queries that patients may have and ensuring the surgical wait list is managed so patients are being treated on time."

Dr Lucy takes her role working with our older population seriously, and while she loves spending time with her patients on the TPCH ward, she is happiest when they get to go ‘home’.

Not all patients will be well enough to return to the home they have known, and many are waiting for aged care placements in a residential aged care facility.

“We know our patients who are well enough to leave hospital should not be spending longer than they need in a hospital ward – it’s much better for patients both clinically and emotionally if they can be discharged to their new home,” Dr Dakin said.

“As a geriatrician, we work hard to keep our older patients awaiting aged care placements as physically and emotionally well as we can, but we understand that more interim care arrangements and aged care solutions are needed.

“We treat unwell patients, but when a patient is well enough to be discharged to their new home with supports so they can continue doing the things they love, we want to see them do that.” 💛🏡

"I was a midwife here at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and I watched this building being built, and then the transition into the new building before retiring. It is my first time back here as an inpatient and I am astounded by how busy it is, but also how organised it is and how skilful and caring everyone is. These days I am the social coordinator for my retirement village, so I organise the outings and activities, my favourite is the bus trips and picnics. I'd say my advice is to follow your dreams, I always wanted to be a nurse, so I followed mine."

Comprehensive Breast Cancer Institute Director and Metro North breast surgeon Professor Owen is looking forward to continuing work with BellaSeno on a revolutionary breast scaffold project using a bioresorbable 3D printed scaffold and the patient's own fat cells.

Metro North's institutes CBCI and HBI together led BellaSeno’s previous two-year first-in-human safety trial, with the successful trial making way for the next stage of research.

“The initial clinical investigation gave us important early evidence about the scaffold’s safety profile and patient outcomes, paving the way for this next phase and the possibility of helping more patients,” he said.

“The next stage of this work is about continuing to build that evidence responsibly, with rigorous clinical oversight, longer-term follow-up and a clear focus on patient safety.

“Australia has played a central role in this research from the beginning, and this primary augmentation construction is a significant step in understanding how this technology may provide future options for people considering breast surgery.”

Between managing staff, ensuring quality standards and even jumping into the kitchen to bake for our aged care residents, Assistant Site Coordinator for Food Services at the Brighton Health Precinct Louise wears many hats! 🍰

"I do the baking for aged care, so Gannet House gets fresh cakes twice a week. My specialty is the lemon drizzle cake," she says.

"My favourite part of this role is what I can give to our patients, residents and staff, being able to support everyone through their work but also with anything happening in their personal lives.

"I also organise social events for our staff, right now I am working on something for R U OK day, it's great to give back to the team after their hard work."

'Trypanophobia' or the phobia of needles affects one in ten Australians, with approximately 20% of people experiencing some sort of fear or anxiety in receiving a needle. 💉😨

Dr Grace who is a joint Research Fellow at the RBWH and Queensland University of Technology (QUT), as well as a Nurse Practitioner at the RBWH ED, says that her ED experience informed her research on how virtual reality can help adults with a needle phobia.

"I cared for an adult patient with severe needle phobia who urgently required suturing, but his anxiety made the procedure extremely difficult. It highlighted that, although needle anxiety is common and can be profoundly distressing, clinicians have limited practical options to support adults in the moment," she said.

"Virtual reality offered a potentially simple way to provide immersive distraction and give patients a greater sense of control during a stressful procedure.

"Both patients and staff reported positive experiences, with virtual reality appearing to help patients feel calmer and better supported during a stressful procedure."

Are you looking to kickstart your plumbing career whilst also contributing to the safety and care of patients at Queensland's largest hospital? 👨‍🔧🪠

Trade Coordinator in Plumbing Andy started his apprenticeship at the RBWH in 2004 and is now looking to welcome a new era of plumbing to the RBWH.

"An apprenticeship here will involve a lot of maintenance work, as well as some new work jobs and preventative maintenance, ensuring the upkeep across the hospital," Andy said.

"You'll come out of it with a Certificate III in plumbing and draining, it's competency-based learning over the course of three and a half to four years.

"Working at Metro North, you gain a specialised skillset of working in a hospital, with a good team and you feel like you're doing your part for patients."
