📢 Public Service Announcement 📢

There’s a mysterious new organisation popping up called the Australian College of Volunteering… and some of you have questions. So let’s clear this up

No, it didn’t descend from the heavens in an immaculate flash of brilliance. It’s literally our RTO — same team, same nationally accredited training — just with a fresh name and a glow‑up.

Still powered by 30+ years of sector leadership. Still created by the experts (that’s us). Just looking a whole lot cooler.

For every volunteer, the 'why' is different.

For Phil Smith — our 2026 Queensland New to Volunteering Award recipient — it’s about honouring his late wife Leah's wish to raise awareness of asbestos‑related cancers.

Phil Smith began volunteering with Advocacy Australia Asbestos Education just 12 weeks after losing his wife Leah to malignant mesothelioma. He founded Ride in Shorts for Leah, creating a powerful awareness and fundraising movement held on what would have been Leah’s 50th birthday.

Phil's ‘why’ is saving lives and his advocacy is an inspiring example of the power of volunteering.

Better late than never. Meet Diana, our Sector Engagement and Development volunteer.

Diana is an invaluable member of the Volunteering Queensland team, supporting the Sector Engagement and Development team research and analyse trends affecting the local community sector to help develop practical support strategies.

Diana wanted to volunteer because she had extra time she wanted to spend differently. “I was looking for a productive way to add a bit of structure to my week and step out of my routine.”

When asked how volunteering has impacted her, Diana said: “On a personal level, this role has given me a profound sense of purpose. Knowing that my work helps build sustainable systems and supports the people driving community initiatives is incredibly rewarding.”

If Diana motivates you to give volunteering a go, search our volunteer roles and get involved: https://volunteeringqld.org.au/

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to reflect on our shared histories, cultures, and futures, and to consider the role we each play in reconciliation.

This year's theme, 'All in', reminds us that reconciliation requires ongoing action, learning, and commitment for all of us.

Here at Volunteering Queensland, we are committed to learning more about our shared histories and cultures, and exploring how we can contribute meaningfully to achieving reconciliation.
