Additional CityCat closures are hitting the Brisbane network as industrial action between crews and the operator, RiverCity Ferries continues. The F1, F11, F12, F21, F22, F23, & F24 services will be affected, replacement bus services have not been arranged this time, and commuters have been instructed to make alternative travel plans. The affected times are as follows:

Friday 21 August
9-11am
4-6pm

Saturday 22 August
11am to 1pm

Monday 24 August
12-4pm

Wednesday 26 August
7-9am
3-5pm

Queensland Rail has announced they will be returning some previously cancelled peak train trips to service, following an increase in train availability. This change amounts to approximately 1 additional train per hour per line during peak. BTQ welcomes this partial restoration of service, but emphasies that QR and unions must continue to work to restore full service to the network.

BTQ strongly supports the introduction of train line numbering for SEQ. Line numbering improves the legibility of the rail network, is common practice throughout the world and matches what we already do on buses, ferries and trams.

The line numbers will be as follows:
T1: Rosewood to Gympie North (incl. Ipswich, Caboolture & Nambour)
T2: Springfield Central to Kippa-Ring
T3: Doomben
T4: Cleveland to Shorncliffe
T5: Varsity Lakes to Brisbane Airport
T6: Beenleigh to Ferny Grove

The long-awaited Gold Coast Light Rail extension to Burleigh Heads opens this Sunday, after approximately 4 years of construction & testing. This vital project expands on one of Queensland's most successful and fastest-growing transport services, bringing high quality transport closer to more of the region. BTQ encourages local, state, and federal governments to continue the build-out of the light rail network via projects like the Harbour Town branch and the shelved Stage 4 extension to the airport & Coolangatta. This ensures design & construction skill is not lost between projects, and allows us to build cheaper and more efficiently through the development of local expertise.

Translink has confirmed that the new Roma Street Busway platform 1 will open on the 10th of August, as upgrade works on the station progress. The new platform will be accessible from within the station entrance, eliminating the confusing and time-consuming walk out of the station required by the previous arrangement. BTQ is pleased to see these works progress, ensuring that Roma Street station provides high quality transfer locations for users of both buses and trains.

CORRECTION: Friday 7th of August, thanks to those who pointed it out!

Translink has announced that no Brisbane ferry services will run from 8am to 10am Friday morning due to industrial action between crews and the operator, RiverCity Ferries. The F1, F11, F12, F21, F22, F23, & F24 services will be affected, and while service is expected to resume from 10am Translink advises that additional disruptions may occur at short notice.

This disruption comes just a week after the previous ferry strike. This closure will no doubt push even more passengers onto the already overloaded bus & train networks, introducing further delays and discomfort for all users. We once again encourage all parties to focus on reaching an agreement rather than playing politics to the detriment of the public.

BTQ is pleased to see new high-frequency east-west bus routes planned for the Gold Coast network, but cautions the state government to focus on service & long-term planning over brand names. While we support a new metro-style BRT system for the Gold Coast as part of a comprehensive network plan, there is a risk of getting caught up in branding and the creation of new named services. When planning our public transport network, the focus must always be on providing a good service. A mode-neutral, service-first approach ensures that Queenslanders get the best value for money and the most appropriate services provided to them.

BTQ also stresses that while quick and relatively cheap to deploy, high-frequency buses are an interim measure with limited capacity. Long term strategic planning must still occur to extend Gold Coast Light Rail and heavy rail to the Airport within the next decade.

Airtrain has announced they will be suing the Queensland government for 4.75 million dollars, for losses incurred due to the introduction of 50c fares. Although airport stations are excluded from 50 cent fares, Airtrain states the losses are due to the reduced fares on connecting services for which they receive a cut. The state government has declined to comment on specifics due to the matter being in court, but has stated they are committed to honouring their contractual obligations.

The F1, F11, F12, F21, F22, F23, & F24 services will be affected, and while service is expected to resume from 10am Translink advises that additional disruptions may occur at short notice. Replacement bus services have not been arranged this time, and commuters have been instructed to make alternative travel plans.

This disruption comes as industrial disputes with Queensland Rail continue to wreak havoc on the network. This closure will no doubt push even more passengers onto the already overloaded bus & train networks, introducing further delays and discomfort for all users. BTQ also highlights the short notice given. While we understand that circumstances change, the travelling public must be given as much notice as possible in order to allow riders to make alternative arrangements.

Shorncliffe station officially re-opened this morning, after an 8 month closure for refurbishments and upgrades, including the restoration of several historic features. The new station features a 90m accessible raised platform, an accessible access ramp, upgraded wayfinding, and other improvements.

While making the station step-free is a significant improvement, BTQ remains concerned with the decision to not provide a full-length, full-height platform when upgrading the station. This represents a downgrade when compared to recent accessibility rebuilds, and will require additional costly and time-consuming closures to remedy in the future. We also encourage state government and QR to focus on accelerating the station accessibility upgrade program in order to ensure our network is accessible before the 2032 games.
