STUDENT ACTION WINS BIG IN UQU ELECTIONS!

The results are in for the 2023 UQU elections. Student Action have been re-elected to the Environment Officer positions, picked up 3 councillors, and 2 National Union of Students (NUS) delegates.

Our success shows that there is an appetite among students for left wing politics - the politics of fighting for students rights and social justice. As rents, groceries, and degrees all skyrocket, as our government funnels billions into the military and tax cuts for the mega-wealthy, our student unions cannot just stand by or think sucking up to the uni admin is a winning strategy. Only fighting back collectively can win.

Students know that we are dedicated to activism on every issue from the climate to cost of living to justice for Palestine, year round. We look forward to another year of activism at UQ!

Hey, I’m Ella and I’m running for President with Student Action for 2023! In my role as uq union environment officer over the past two years, I’ve spent every second I can working to organise activism not only for the climate action we desperately need, but for all kinds of things that matter.

In the middle of a cost of living crisis, our government has chosen to give half a trillion dollars in tax cuts to the rich and to nuclear submarines. This is an absolute outrage, as more than ever students fall into poverty and housing stress. Huge sums like this should be spent on fixing the housing crisis in this country, or undoing the worst damage that the climate crisis has already reaped on our environment. Yet the Labor government is content to open more and more coal and gas projects, and refuse to appropriately fund firies and emergency services. A student union should not be silent on these issues. We need an activist union so that we can begin to challenge these attacks, and win a better future for students.

It’s a dire situation for young people today. The approach the environment collective has taken, and one that the whole union should adopt, is that an injury to one is an injury to all, and we need to build a collective fightback for our rights. This has made a practical difference in politics in Australia. Our activists have stood with Indigenous people when we organised the first ever UQ contingent to Invasion Day a few years ago, a tradition that has carried on. We campaigned for rent to be slashed in half at UQ Residences, and organised a protest of 500 construction workers to demand the QLD government take action on the housing crisis. Our activists helped organise the first protest against Posie Poker, the transphobic bigot that later fled Australia. And we have of course continued the fight for climate justice on and off campus, organising a protest as part of the national day of action for climate.

Vote 1 for Student Action so that socialist activists can continue this fight in the union.

Hi, I’m Asha, and I’m running as Student Action’s secretary candidate this year!

Since getting involved in activism, I’ve talked to so many students on campus who are angry at the state of the world. From deepening wealth inequality, the climate crisis, to attacks on womens and LGBTQ+ rights, there’s a lot to be angry about. Right now, the rich in Australia - landlords, property developers and supermarket chains to name a few, are all lining their pockets with record profits, at the hands of students and workers who are seeing our living conditions go backwards in real time.
And in one of the wealthiest countries in the world, what has been the response from the Australian government? It has been to give hundreds of billion dollars in tax cuts to the wealthiest top 5%, alongside hundreds of billions more for nuclear submarines. No money for public housing, welfare or for wages. I think this is an absolute disgrace, and it's clear that we can’t take it lying down.

We need to fight back, and this is exactly what Student Action wants to do. There are almost 60,000 students who attend UQ, and I think it should be the role of the student union to agitate around questions of social justice, and collectively organise students to fight for our rights. I think it’s an insult to students who are struggling right now to waste the vast potential of the student union on parties and service provisions, or worse, suck up to the university administration behind closed doors.

I’m a proud socialist activist, and have been dedicated towards organising protests, such as against Labor’s expansion of the fossil fuel industry, and against the university administration’s rorting of students in their student accommodation.

Vote [1] Student Action for a union that will challenge the current status-quo, and bring together students to fight for our rights!

Im running as Student Action's treasurer candidate this year!

Over the last year, I've spent as much time as possible being an activist, spreading left-wing politics and building protests. From being the first speaker at this year's Invasion day rally, to helping build and taking part in the counter-protests against Posie Parker's transphobic rallies to protesting against the imperialist AUKUS submarine bill outside the Labor party conference.

I know that when there’s injustice in the world people need to fight it. And right now there's a lot of it. While Coles and Woolies make mega profits, the cost-of-living crisis is fu***ng over workers and students and making housing unaffordable. While our VC Deborah Terry rakes in a $1.2 million salary and rubs shoulders with climate criminals like Rio Tinto, Dow Chemicals and Boeing, teaching staff are seeing real wage cuts and worsening workplace conditions and fellow students are getting slammed with higher HECS debt, and worsening teaching conditions. This is not to mention the complete rorting of students at UQres who had to cop a 20% pay increase. What a disgrace! Our uni should not be for profit!

If elected I would use my position to fight against UQ when they rort us instead of the current strategy of the union executive which is to sit on their hands and have meetings with the uni bosses.

Vote [1] Student Action if you want to see a student union that will call out the uni admin and help build up a fighting activist union.

Student Action stands with Palestinians, who have mounted a resistance, bravely tearing down the fences to the border wall and claiming Israeli tanks. 2023 has been the deadliest year on record for Palestinians in the West Bank, with over 200 Palestinians murdered by the Israeli occupation. Palestinians have every right to fight back for their land against colonisation and apartheid from Israel.

We condemn the Australian government its ongoing alliance with Israel, and stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine.

From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free! 🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸

Today's the last day on campus before voting starts! The Liberals are so demoralised and tiny this year that they haven't bothered to show up today, but we'll be here until 4 fighting for left wing politics and a fighting student union.

Voting starts next week and goes from Monday to Friday. We need every vote we can possibly get, if you're on campus today come say hi to any of our campaigners and ask how you can help with the campaign!

Hi, I’m Laura, one of your Environment Officers this year and I’m running for re-election!

I’m proud to say we’ve transformed the Environment Collective into the activist wing of the student union and used it to fight for the environment, students and social justice.

This year I’ve helped to organise the National Day of Action on the climate and against war, built rallies on and off campus against the housing and cost-of-living crisis and organised solidarity with striking workers across the country, from uni staff to retail workers here in Brisbane!

It’s clear that we need to keep this fight going! Rents are skyrocketing, supermarkets are price gouging, student debt is increasing and we’re facing a worsening climate crisis, meanwhile welfare and wages are going backwards. It’s only getting tougher to be a student.

I think the student union has a role to play in getting students to stand up for their rights and fight back against this rotten system that is making our lives worse!

Vote 1 Student Action for an activist union and so we can keep up the fight!!

Hey, I’m Louisa and I’m one of Student Action’s Environment Officer candidates this year.

This year I helped lead my coworkers on two strikes, fighting for our rights in the workplace. Most of the people I work with are young women and nearly all of us are university students. With the cost of living and rental crises continuing, not being paid correctly at work has an even bigger impact on our lives. So we decided that we weren’t going to put up with it and take a stand.

This is the strategy I think the UQ Student Union should take up. There’s a lot to fight for, and the way to win this fight is organising students to actually challenge the status quo. For example, a lot of university students care about the climate crisis, and yet our universities make sweetheart deals with fossil fuel and weapons companies. How we can fix this is by standing up, standing together, and demanding change.

We want to build a left-wing, activist union. Help us by voting [1] Student Action in the upcoming elections.

Yo I'm Fletcher, Student Action's candidate for Campus Culture VP. It's no secret that 2023 has been a terrible year for the conditions of workers and students. We're currently experiencing a cost of living crisis that is making it harder and harder for people to buy basic necessities all while corporations make record profits. The housing crisis is making it impossible to find any rental let alone one that is affordable. And we're hurtling towards climate catastrophe with Labor’s continued commitment to the fossil fuel industry.

The Labor government has done nothing to address any of these key issues affecting ordinary people and in fact have shown their priority to be serving the rich. Their refusal to expand Jobseeker/Youth Allowance to above the poverty line or massively expanding public housing all while spending 100s of billions of dollars on tax cuts for the rich and nuclear submarines illustrates this commitment clearly. The uni administration has also disgracefully taken advantage of the housing crisis to make a quick profit by raising the rent at UQ Res by upwards of 20%. As much as they like to claim ‘its market price’, it’s plain and simple that they are price gouging and profiteering during a crisis.

This is exactly why we need a student union that fights for its members. Because in the face of constant attacks from the ruling class it's ordinary workers and students who must fight our their rights. Whether it's Mint My Desk workers going on strike for their basic rights or students protesting the horrible cost of living and housing crises. This is the strategy we need to look to and build here at UQ - collective action that puts pressure on the politicians and bosses. So if I'm elected, I will be committing my time and resources to help build a campus culture of activism and getting even more students involved to fight for our rights!
