This National Nutrition Week, we’re highlighting the important role that nutrition plays in supporting the health and wellbeing of people living with cystic fibrosis (CF).
While some people with CF continue to experience malnutrition, the nutritional profile of the CF community is changing. National Nutrition Week is a timely reminder that nutrition plays an essential role in health and wellbeing. For people with CF, as CFTR modulators continue to change the experience of living with CF, nutritional care should evolve with their needs alongside their treatment and growth.
Nutritional needs can vary significantly between individuals and change over time. For many years, nutrition care in CF focused on helping children gain enough weight through high-calorie foods, supplements and additional nutritional support. However, as CFTR modulator therapies improve how some children absorb nutrients and gain weight, nutrition needs are changing too. Overweight and obesity are increasingly recognised as emerging challenges, particularly for people receiving highly effective CFTR modulator therapies.
Good nutrition is about more than weight. It supports energy levels, lung health, physical strength and overall quality of life. Regular guidance from a cystic fibrosis dietitian can help ensure nutritional needs are met as health and circumstances evolve.
At Cystic Fibrosis Queensland, we recognise that nutritional wellbeing is an important part of a holistic approach to living well with CF.
