Dog owners are on notice: 142 dog attacks were reported across Mitchell Shire in 2025/26, up from 130 the previous year.

The consequences have been devastating – people hospitalised, family pets killed and dogs responsible for attacks euthanised.

We’re taking a zero-tolerance approach to irresponsible dog ownership. Owners who fail to contain and control their dogs face enforcement action.

If you own a dog, you’re responsible for keeping others safe:

• Check your fences and gates are secure

• Keep your dog on a leash in public, except in designated off-leash areas

• Make sure your dog’s registration is current

Better rail connections. Improvements to the Hume Freeway. Easier access to hospital and specialist healthcare.

These are issues we continue to hear about from Mitchell Shire residents – and they’re shared across Melbourne’s north.

We’ve joined the six other councils of the Northern Councils Alliance (NCA) to call for State Election commitments to:

🔹the Upfield to Wallan rail extension

🔹a transformed northern bus network

🔹expansion of the Hume Freeway

🔹the Outer Metropolitan Ring Road and E6

🔹a new outer north hospital

🔹completion of the Northern Trails Network

🔹expansion of the Inclusive Employment Program.

Our priority projects are well-defined and, in an election year, we are asking all candidates to work with us to ensure our community has access to jobs, education and services.

H5 bird flu is present in wild birds in Victoria.

There have been increasing detections of H5 bird flu across Victoria. There are currently no reported cases in Mitchell Shire.

If you see sick or dead birds or wildlife avoid contact and note:
- date and time
- location (GPS pin, nearby roads, or landmarks)
- type or description of birds or animals
- how many birds or other animals are sick or dead
- what they look like (e.g. freshly dead or just bones, signs of disease)

If safe, take photos or ideally a video, then report it online through the link below or call the 24-hour Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

We’re united with the Kilmore community behind a clear State Election call: deliver a public secondary school for Kilmore.

Kilmore is Victoria’s largest town without a public secondary school. More than 1,200 secondary school-aged children already live locally, with students travelling to Wallan, Broadford and further afield each day.

Our message to every party and candidate contesting the 2026 Victorian State Election is clear: commit to purchasing the land, designing and constructing the school.

Council is supporting community group Public High School For Kilmore, which is holding a meeting where residents can learn more and add their voice to the campaign.

Mitchell residents officially became Australian citizens at two citizenship ceremonies in Broadford yesterday.

The day saw individuals and entire families receive their citizenship in the ceremony conducted by Mitchell Shire Mayor John Dougall.

We conduct these citizenship ceremonies every few months to welcome new Australians to Mitchell Shire, with many of them choosing to become citizens after moving here and joining the welcoming community.
