A new chapter is underway. As we transition from Byron Shire Respite Service to HeyDay Supports, you’ll begin to see our new brand taking shape across the Northern Rivers in the weeks ahead.

We’re taking a thoughtful, phased approach as we update our centres, materials and communications.

There’s more to come. And as with all meaningful change, we’re taking the time to do it well. Thank you for being part of this next phase of our journey. Stay tuned.

It’s National Carers Week! Carers are parents, partners, children, friends, and neighbours. Their support allows loved ones to stay at home and remain part of their communities.

Caring can bring closeness, purpose, and pride — but it can also be demanding. Many carers face financial pressure, social isolation, and impacts on their own health and wellbeing.

If you’re a carer, may this week remind you that you too deserve care, rest, and recognition.

If you live in the Byron, Ballina, Tweed Heads, or Lismore shires, our monthly Carers Coffee Club offers a welcoming space for carers of loved ones living with dementia. Once a month, over a cup of coffee, local carers come together to share stories, swap tips, and find encouragement in one another’s company.

Give us a call on (02) 6685 1921 or email [email protected] to find out more.

Today we join in celebrating the United Nations International Day of Older Persons 2025. This year’s theme reminds us that older people aren’t just recipients of care, they are drivers of change, sharing knowledge, strength, and experiences that help shape resilient, caring communities. ❤️

We know that dementia doesn’t just impact the person living with it and their carers - it touches their friends, family and the wider community too.

This Dementia Action Week we’re proud to support Dementia Australia’s call to reach out and reconnect to someone impacted by dementia.

Our care manager, Karen Harborow, has worked with Richmond Tweed Regional Library in Brunswick Heads to create a hub of dementia books and resources – a space to learn, connect, and feel supported.

If you live in the , , , or shires and are caring for a loved one who is older, living with dementia, or has diverse needs, reach out to us. We’re here to give you the break you deserve.

Today is Aged Care Employee Day, and we’re saying a big THANK YOU.

Every day, our incredible staff bring care, heart, and dedication to their work and enrich the lives of our clients and carers with kindness, creativity, and professionalism.

At Byron Respite, we live our organisation’s values by Celebrating Life, acting with Integrity, building genuine Connections, Being Present, and showing Creativity in how we support people, particularly those living with dementia and other disabilities. We also meet our clients where they are at, always treating them with dignity and respect.

To our team… thank you for all that you do. You make a difference not just today, but every day.

Our Elders group had a beautiful day out in the sun celebrating at the Lismore Family Day, hosted by Lismore City Council and Rekindling The Spirit Ltd.

They were welcomed with a traditional smoking ceremony and enjoyed powerful cultural performances from artists including Mitch King, Tom Avery (AKA Blakboi), and Chris Mallory, who led a special sing-along just for our group overlooking the field. Chris regularly performs at our centres and has recently written two songs with the Elders group about growing up on Country.

A lovely day spent honouring the strength, vision and legacy of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

It’s National Volunteer Week, Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteering, and we’re all about acknowledging the contributions of the wonderful volunteers at Byron Respite Service.

Take Louise, for example. She first came to us as a client seeking one-on-one support but quickly began volunteering herself. It’s changed her life — giving her purpose, reconnecting her with a sense of self, and the life she enjoyed when she was working.

She’s changed lives here at Byron Respite too. Her efforts support our staff every day, and she’s made meaningful connections with our clients that brighten their lives in deeply personal ways.

To Louise and all our wonderful volunteers — including our board members and subcommittee members — thank you. You are truly part of the beating heart of Byron Respite and our community.

Whether you have skills in care work, the arts, hospitality, or simply love helping others, there’s a place for you at Byron Respite. Visit our Brunswick Heads & Lennox day programs for older adults, people living with dementia, or disabilities, and you’ll immediately sense the atmosphere of care, love, and fun.

Please get in touch to express your interest - call 02) 6685 1921 or email [email protected]
