Tonight, the Bruthen Fire Brigade with guest Commander Miles Malcolm, enjoyed the annual awards night.

Every year we meet together to relax, celebrate our members who have attained awards, and have a good time. This year we celebrated two of our members, Paul Nichol and Sue Smith.

Paul was presented with his 10 year service award by Cmdr Miles and Capt Ross. This recognises a decade-long commitment to the CFA. Paul has been an exemplary fire fighter, trainer and mentor.

Sue received her Life Membership to the Bruthen Fire Brigade by Cmdr Miles and Capt Ross. This acknowledges 25 years of dedication and service. Sue has served as fire fighter, secretary, and support member. She now joins our revered life members.

Expertly catered for by Bruthen Bowls Club, the brigade were treated to roast dinner and a delicious dessert, finished up with yummy lolly bags for the young.

Awards night is an important date on the Brigade calendar. We also welcomed our new members and their families.

It's the 1st July and the first day for Bruthen Fire Brigade's new Brigade Management Team.

Outgoing Captain James Nicholas, thanked over twenty members assembled for their support during the past eight years of Captaincy, before handing over to and promoting new Brigade Captain, Ross Hermans. Ross has been a member of the Bruthen Fire Brigade for nearly 15 years, with the the last six spent as a Lieutenant.

Captain Hermans then promoted Fire Fighters Shane Turner and Jon Whitfield to Lieutenant, also acknowledging existing Lieutenants Anthony Martin and Bryce Lewis who have moved to different Lieutenant 'portfolios'.

Finally, three new members were welcomed to the Brigade - Eden Galpin, Tony Adams and Kane Gould, who will all shortly undertake a General Fire Fighters Course, in preparation for the upcoming fire season.

Congratulations to all and a big thankyou to the local community who continue to provide ongoing support to the Brigade (your community volunteer Brigade).

Across Victoria there are approximately 1000 home fires over the winter period each year. Chimney and fireplace fires are common and the CFA this year has been called to a number of incidents , where fire resulted in significant damage to homes. Local residents are advised to make sure your chimneys are safe prior to use.

A small amount of preparation and prevention could save your house this year if there are maintenance, repair or soot/tar build up issues.

After the recent retirement of our long standing Bruthen Chimney Sweep, we are fortunate enough to have the services of another local. Call Alex - as required, details attached

Once FDP ends, please register your burns by calling: 1800-668-511.

Before you carry out your private burn-off, ensure:

-You are following regulations or laws by CFA and your local council.
-You notify your neighbours if your activity will generate fire and smoke.
-Check the weather forecast for the day of the activity and a few days afterwards.
-Establish a gap in vegetation or fire break of no less than three metres cleared of all flammable material.
-There are enough people to monitor, contain and extinguish the burn safely and effectively.
