Phoenix House

Phoenix House Providing supportive, safe, and trusted counselling for people with a lived experience of sexual violence.

Support is available for all genders and ages in the Bundaberg Region. Referrals can be completed via our website or call 4153 4299. Phoenix House Association Incorporated has been supporting people living in the Bundaberg region since 1995, originally operating as the ‘Bundaberg Area Sexual Assault Service’. Since that time, we have grown exponentially and now provide a wide range of counselling

and support services to people of all ages, for a variety of reasons, while still providing specialist support to people who have been impacted by sexual violence. We are a non-government and registered charity organisation, with many of our services funded through Federal and State Government grants. We work hard to provide a ‘No Wrong Door’ approach to meeting the mental health, therapeutic, and wellbeing support needs of our local and regional communities. If we are not able to provide direct supports, we will assist you in identifying local services who can. Phoenix House offers telehealth and phone consultations when appropriate, allowing clients who are impacted by barriers like geographic location, transport challenges, or public health concerns like COVID-19, to continue to access to service provision and resources. Phoenix House employees meet a range of disciplines inclusive of: Mental Health Accredited Social Workers, Social Workers, Accredited Counsellors, Qualified Mental Health Support Workers and several other disciplines and volunteers congruent with therapeutic counselling, education, and community support. We welcome Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and provide the option of engaging with one of our cultural liaison staff. We are a diverse workforce and welcome people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse backgrounds, and those who identify as LGBTQIA+. Outside of office hours please contact the below services

✨ Sunday Inspiration ✨

Sometimes the words we speak to ourselves matter more than we realise.
Today, we're reminding ourselves:
💜 I am strong.
💜 I am capable.
💜 I am resilient.

What words would you add to the list?
Maybe it's:
✨ I am enough.
✨ I am brave.
✨ I am worthy.
✨ I am growing.
✨ I am loved.
✨ I am determined.

Share your favourite "I am..." mantra in the comments and let's inspire each other. 💜

Today marks the start of Men’s Health Week, a time to raise awareness of the physical and mental health issues affecting Australian men, and open a dialogue about treatment and prevention.
The Australian Child Maltreatment Study (2023) found that almost 19% of Australian men experienced sexual abuse in childhood - that’s over 2 million men.
As a victim-survivor of sexual violence you are welcome to reach out to Pheonix House if you need support.
Referrals can be made on our website or call 4153 4299.

For 82% of these men, the perpetrator was known to them, with 32% offended against by a family member, and 33% by a person known to them in an institutional setting (33%).

Men are also more likely to delay disclosure for many years, with many never disclosing at all.

A 2025 research article titled Male Survivors of Institutional Child Sexual Abuse: A Review. Trauma Violence Abuse (Wyles, P, et.al.) found several factors may contribute to men not disclosing or delaying disclosure.

👉 Socially defined gender roles - the norms of masculinity, developed and reinforced from childhood to adulthood.

👉 Gender roles - a male understanding of what ‘being a man’ means (i.e., strong, self-reliant, not a victim).

👉 Shame and fear - many male victim/survivors fear they will be viewed as homosexual or weak, and others are concerned they will be perceived as at risk of sexual offending themselves.

👉 Confusion - some male victim/survivors are confused about the nature of the abuse and/or are not able to articulate what occurred. Furthermore, they may have been told by their abuser that this is a normal part of their childhood sexual experiences/sexual development or minimised the abuse as sexual exploration or experimentation.

We must have more conversations around how child sexual abuse affects male victim/survivors, and how delayed disclosure and help-seeking can prolong and exacerbate men’s physical and mental ill health.

If you need support or advice around child sexual abuse, please reach out to Bravehearts on 1800 272 831 (Mon to Fri, 8:30am - 4:30pm).

🦋 Choosing Kindness 🦋
We always talk about being kind to others, but what about kindness towards yourself? It isn't always easy, but it can start with something small. A moment of rest, gentle self talk, or giving yourself credit for getting through the day.

What's a tip you can share with others that you do to show kindness to yourself?
