Now is the time to check and maintain your firebreaks before fire season arrives.

Well-maintained firebreaks help provide access for firefighting vehicles and can assist in protecting your property during a bushfire.

Firebreak requirements vary between local governments, so make sure you're familiar with the requirements for your property.

70th Anniversary Celebrations

Last night our brigade proudly celebrated 70 years of serving the Burekup community at our Anniversary Dinner — a milestone made possible by generations of dedicated volunteers.

A huge thank‑you to the people and organisations who helped make the night special:

• Jodie Hanns MLA and Paul Papalia for generously funding the purchase of our 70th Anniversary shirts
• Promote Bunbury for printing the shirts
• Debbie Panetta and her team for the outstanding catering
• Sweet Temptations by Lexi for the beautiful anniversary cupcakes
• Burekup & District Country Club for providing the hall
• Shire of Dardanup for their sponsorship and support
• And our Brigade Committee, who put in countless hours to organise the event

🔥 Fire Season Preparation Reminder 🔥

As we head into fire season, now is the time to start preparing your property. Clear excess vegetation, create and maintain firebreaks, and tidy up around your home to help reduce fire risk.

If you're planning a burn-off, please remember to register it with DFES by calling 08 9395 9209 (24 hours). This helps prevent unnecessary brigade callouts and ensures emergency services are aware of your activity.

Property owners also have a responsibility to remain at their property and assist if a fire starts, where it is safe to do so. Please stay in communication with the Officer in charge and Fire Control Officer's and support emergency services as required.

Being prepared now can make a big difference when it matters most. Stay safe, get ready early, and help keep our community safe.

A huge thank you to Bryon Ynema, the Blue Hire crew, and the neighbours who jumped into action this morning at the corner of Hutchinson Road and Crampton Road. Your quick thinking and teamwork helped stop a shed fire from spreading to the nearby house before fire appliances arrived. Your efforts made a real difference and are truly appreciated.

We would also like to acknowledge and thank our neighbouring volunteer brigades — Waterloo Bushfire Brigade and Brunswick Junction Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service — for responding and supporting the incident. Your professionalism and willingness to assist is always valued.

And to our own Burekup VBFB members, thank you for starting the week off strong. Your commitment to the community never goes unnoticed.

On this day, 25 years ago, 343 firefighters made the ultimate sacrifice while responding to the terrorist attacks in New York.

Today, firefighters and emergency responders around the world honour their memory and the values they stood for: courage, commitment and service to others.

We also acknowledge and thank all firefighters and first responders in our communities whose dedication and bravery make a difference every day.

Happy Father's Day to all the dads of our Fire Brigade. ❤️

Today we celebrate the fathers who answer the call, both at home and in our community. To the dads balancing family life with emergency callouts, the FIFO fathers spending time away from loved ones to provide for their families, the solo dads carrying the load on their own, stepdads, grandads, father figures, and those who support and guide the next generation, we thank you.

Your dedication, sacrifice, strength, and love do not go unnoticed. Whether you're on the fireground, at work, or at home helping with homework, cheering from the sidelines, or simply being there when it matters most, you make a difference every day.

From all of us at Burekup Bushfire Brigade, we wish you a safe, happy, and well-deserved Father's Day. Thank you for everything you do for your families and our community. ❤️

Broome-based drone photographer Matt Deakin has won the Australian Georgraphic Nature Photographer of the Year with 'Ethereal Encounter'.

The photo depicts a critically endangered green sawfish swimming with a green turtle in waters off a remote part of the Pilbara coast between Broome and Port Hedland.

Deakin said he spends around half the year with his camera and drone looking for marine life, and attributes the result to consistency.

"I was just flying the drone around looking for turtles and stingrays and this sawfish just presented itself in the shallow water," he said.

When he received his drone back on only 3%, he was shocked at the result.

"I was so excited with what I’d seen and I ran over to my partner….I was almost ecstatic and lost for words."

The competition attracted more than 2,100 entries from 501 photographers in 17 countries.

"It feels like a heroic image for the region," he said.
