On Monday, July 27, 2026, at 12 noon AWST, the vast majority of mobile phones in Australia, along with select smartwatches and tablets, will activate an AusAlert critical alert. This alert will manifest as a vibration, a prominent siren-like sound, and a visual display, lasting approximately 10 seconds.

Moving forward, AusAlert is intended for deployment across a spectrum of emergency scenarios, encompassing bushfires, significant public safety incidents, outbreaks of animal or plant diseases, and pandemics.

It is important to note that this alert is not disseminated via the Emergency WA application or any other emergency services application. AusAlert represents a new federal government initiative, integrated into Australia's nationally operated emergency alert system, with the objective of delivering timely warnings during severe emergencies.

Lithium ion batteries are in almost everything — phones, tablets, vapes, power banks, toys, and tools. When they’re damaged, overheated, or charged incorrectly, they can fail without warning and cause fires like the one shown here.
Before you plug in tonight, take a moment to check:
✅ Charge devices on a hard, flat surface — never on a bed or couch
✅ Stop using chargers or cables that are frayed, bent, or overheating
✅ Replace swollen, damaged, or cheap unbranded batteries
✅ Keep devices out of direct sunlight and away from flammable materials
❌ Don’t sleep with your phone under your pillow or on your bed ❌ Don’t leave devices charging unattended

Lithium ion batteries are in almost everything — phones, tablets, vapes, power banks, toys, and tools. When they’re damaged, overheated, or charged incorrectly, they can fail without warning and cause fires like the one shown here.

🔥 Fire Blankets – Know How to Use One Before You Need It

A fire blanket is one of the simplest and safest ways to put out a small cooking fire — but only if you know how to use it properly.

Kitchen fires can flare up in seconds, especially when oil is involved.
Before you start cooking today, remember:
✅ Keep a fire blanket in an easy to reach spot — not in a drawer. ✅ If a pot catches fire, turn off the heat immediately.
✅ Pull the tabs, hold the blanket up as a shield, and place it gently over the flames.
✅ Leave the blanket in place until the pot has completely cooled.

❌ Never use water on an oil fire — it can cause an explosion of flames.
❌ Don’t try to move a burning pot.

Fire blankets are inexpensive and easy to find — most hardware stores (including Bunnings) sell them for around $9–$25 depending on size.

A little preparation can prevent a serious emergency.

🔋 Don’t Get Burned by Your Battery

Damaged or discarded batteries can cause serious fires — even after they’re thrown away. Whether it’s a phone, power tool, or household device, battery safety starts with proper disposal.

Before you toss it out, check:
✅ Is the battery dented, swollen, or leaking?
✅ Does it smell strange or feel hot?
✅ Has it come into contact with water?
✅ Does it no longer hold charge?

If yes, don’t bin it — take it to a local recycling centre. Never throw batteries in general waste.

A few minutes of care can prevent a dangerous fire. Let’s keep Burekup homes safe this winter.

Before you head out or turn in tonight, take a moment to check:

✅ Keep heaters at least one metre from anything that can burn. ✅ Don’t overload power boards or use damaged cords.
✅ Never leave cooking or candles unattended.
✅ Test your smoke alarms regularly — they save lives.

Please Register Your Burn Before You Light Up
With storm clean‑ups well underway after last weekend, many locals are clearing fallen branches and debris. It’s tempting to start making piles and burning them off — but before you light up, please register your burn.

Registering your burn means:

🔥 Our volunteers aren’t called away from their own clean‑ups
🔥 Other brigades across the Shire aren’t turned out unnecessarily
🔥 000 can confirm your burn is planned and safe
🔥 Resources stay available for real emergencies

It only takes a couple of minutes and makes a huge difference for our crews.
