NOTE: The Bushfire Danger Period has been brought forward to the 14th September.

Bush Fire Danger Period to start on 14 September 2026

The Bush Fire Danger Period of the Wingecarribee Shire Council and Wollondilly Shire Council areas has been brought forward to 14 September due to prevailing dry conditions. This means that a Fire Permit will be required from 14 September to light or maintain fire in the open.

Residents and land holders should also ensure they understand the rules around the use of fire. Along with required fire permits, you must also notify your local fire authority and neighbours of your intent to burn 24 hours in advance.

To apply for a Fire Permit visit www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify and be sure to give us as much notice as possible as a Fire Permit Officer will need to visit your property prior to issuing a permit.

Know the risks for your area, have a bush fire survival plan and discuss what you and your family will do if threatened by fire.

Get Ready Weekend 2026 is almost here! Meet your local Burrawang brigade at BURRAWANG PUBLIC SCHOOL on the 19th of September at 10am. There will be a coffee van and the P&C is firing up the BBQ!! We’ll give you an update on the upcoming fire season and show you the practical steps you can take to keep your home and loved ones safe.

Brigade members will be back out tomorrow morning continuing the hydrant maintenance checks. We apologise in advance for any disturbance to the water - but this will clear quickly. If you see us out and about tomorrow, feel free to ask how you can adopt a hydrant. Thanks again.

Members of the brigade have been out today clearing and testing hydrants in the village. This is an important maintenance task we’re conducting in preparation for next summer. You may notice some discolouration in your water but this will clear quickly. Thank you for your support!

The Official Bush Fire Danger Period will conclude at midnight tomorrow (31 March 2026) for the Wingecarribee Shire Council and Wollondilly Shire Council LGA's.

From Wednesday 1 April, fire permits will no longer be required for residents in Burrawang.

HOWEVER - Even though a fire permit is no longer required, you MUST STILL NOTIFY your neighbours and the local fire authority 24 hours before burning as well as comply with any Council Backyard Burning Policies.

Before lighting up, you should also check the forecast weather conditions and have sufficient equipment on hand to control and contain the fire to your own property. Failure to notify neighbours or the RFS, or allowing a fire to escape can result in significant fines.

TO NOTIFY YOUR INTENT TO BURN, use the online burn notification tool at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify or call your local Fire Control Centre during business hours.

It's chilly out there! ❄️

If you are lighting the fire for the first time this season - please pay extra attention, especially if you haven't had your chimney swept since last winter.

Incomplete combustion creates creosote in the chimney, which, if left to accumulate, can block the chimney and ignite 💥 - which is why it's so important to have your chimney checked and cleaned regularly.

At approx. 0200 this morning Burrawang 2 responded to a car alight at the Sheepwash roundabout. An abandoned car was found alight and quickly extinguished with assistance from Robertson Rural Fire Brigade. A great response on a very wet evening.

Tomorrow's (Sat 10/01) FDR has been upgraded to EXTREME. A Total Fire Ban (TOBAN) is in place from midnight tonight for 24hrs.

During a Total Fire Ban you cannot light, maintain or use a fire in the open, or to carry out any activity in the open that causes, or is likely to cause, a fire.

FDR for today has been upgraded to High. Permits suspended through to Sunday.

Fire Permits Suspended until Sunday 11 January

As the Fire Danger is forecast to increase over the coming days due to the heat wave conditions due to effect much of NSW, all fire permits are suspended until Sunday 11 January for the Wingecarribee Shire Council and Wollondilly Shire Council areas.

Ensure that any piles are fully extinguished and are checked regularly given the extreme temperatures and risk of reignition. If you have been burning in recent weeks, re-check the site, turn it over and ensure that it is cold and safe.

Report all unattended fires to Triple Zero (000) immediately.
