0001hrs Thursday 10 September 2026 to 2359hrs Wednesday 16 September 2026, inclusive.

No new permits will be issued during this time.

AVOID SMOKE - Kirkwood (near Gladstone) - fire as at 10:03pm Thursday, 3 September 2026

Warning level: ADVICE

Warning area: Kirkwood, Glen Eden, Telina and surrounding areas

Thick smoke is affecting Kirkwood, Glen Eden, Telina and surrounding areas. This is from a large fire burning near Kirkwood Road.

Fire crews are currently on scene. This fire could burn for days. Protect yourself from the impacts of smoke.

What you should do:

- If the smoke is thick where you are, stay inside and close windows and doors.

- If you need medication to help you breathe keep it close.

- If you are worried about your health call your doctor or 13 HEALTH (13 432 584). If it is an emergency, call Triple Zero (000) now.

- If you are affected by the smoke you may need to leave the area.

- Check for warning updates often.

- Do not fly drones around the fire as they affect firefighting.

Impacts:

- No properties are at risk.

- Smoke could make it hard for some people to breathe and can cause health issues.

- Some roads may be closed or impacted by smoke. It could be hard to see. You may need to drive a different way.

Good Evening everybody.

Just a few points of note regarding permits and applications-

New restrictions for permits as follows- as at 25/08/2026

• Permits should only be issued for the absolute minimum amount of time.
• Lighting of Fires is permitted between 1600 hrs and 0900 hrs the following day, once a
permit to burn has been obtained from the local fire warden. This will ensure fires are lit
in the very late afternoon or evening when the rate of spread will be reduced.
• Fire Breaks are to be BARE EARTH with a minimum width of 4 metres established
adjacent to the intended burn area.
• Wind is not to be greater than 20km per hour including the wind gusts.
• The burn is to be patrolled until the fire is made safe and completely blacked out.
• Blackout area of 20 metres depth from the fire control line or 1 ½ times the height of the
tallest tree is recommended.

Please also be mindful that this process WILL take some time to complete. Our Warden and Fire Fighters are all volunteers, this will mean that sometimes we cannot cater to the times or days that suit you so please advise us, in the appropriate timeframe, when suits you. This also might mean that we book a time to complete your burn but may end up at a higher priority firecall.

While we try to complete everyones needs in a timely and professional manner, we may have to sometimes rebook or cancel your burn due to crewing, weather or permit conditions. Applications for Permits can be found on the front of our station at 1 Mcgrath Rd, Burura. Please contact the Warden AFTER you have completed the application, they will arrange a time that suits them the best to meet with you, discuss options and advice before handing you a written Permit to Light.
