In 1997, residents were concerned about the effect that proposed developments would have on homes, trade, commerce, and traffic arrangements in Burwood. These residents were concerned that planning controls were not being followed and that the community was unaware of the impact that this might have on their amenities and livelihood. As a result, a group called the ‘Friends of Burwood’ was formed
to:
highlight these issues to the Burwood community, and
lobby and challenge Burwood Council’s decisions. In 1998, it was decided that the Burwood community would be better served
by having representation on Burwood Council. Consequently, the name
was changed to ‘Burwood Community Voice’ and became a political party for
the purpose of local government elections. The Burwood community gave their support through the ballot box and since
1998, Burwood Community Voice has had representation on Burwood Council. Our current representative is Councillor Lesley Furneaux-Cook, who was elected to Burwood Council. Lesley also holds the position of the first female Mayor in Burwood and was elected to that office in 2008. Currently, Lesley is on Burwood Council’s Internal Audit Committee and the Sustainability Committee. Lesley previously served on Burwood Council from 2000 until 2004. She did not stand for re-election in 2004. Instead, Lesley was elected President of Burwood Community Voice at the Annual General Meeting of Burwood Community Voice in 2004. Lesley works as a training consultant and is involved in the community, in school, and local sporting activities, as well as representing residents concerns. The concerns have included development issues in Burwood and the need for
Council to listen to residents. Lesley has made numerous submissions to Council, State Departments, and also galvanises local support against over-development.
