Tonight for World Maritime Day, with the help of AMSA, we have lit up the Bustard Head Lighthouse blue.

During World Maritime Day, we honour seafarers around the globe and drawn attention to maritime safety and the marine environment, as well as the International Maritime Organisation.

Lighting up our tower blue is a massive tribute from us for shining it's lifesaving light for over 153 years.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY

Bustard Head Lighthouse Circa 1930.

You might think this could very well be the first picture ever taken of Bustard Head Lighthouse. However the lighthouse tower was already over 60 years old when this moment in time was captured.

Over a 150 years later and not much has changed at the isolated "Lighthouse of Tragedy".

Constructed - 1885
Deactivated - 1985
Relocated - 1986 (Mackay)
Restored - 2002 (Mackay Marina)

Lightkeeper Jim Swallow adjusts the lantern on the middle shift.

The original lighthouse was active for a hundred years, until 1985, by then it was the last kerosene lighthouse in Australia.

Today, following it's restoration, it's the only remaining kerosene lantern operating in the world.
