Oyama and Cairns Celebrate🎉 20 Years as Sister Cities!

On 27 August, an official delegation and student group from Oyama City, Japan, visited Cairns Regional Council to celebrate a very special milestone, 20 years of Sister City partnership between Oyama and Cairns.

Alongside the annual student visit to Council, Mayors and Councillors of Oyama City and Cairns came together to commemorate two decades of friendship, cultural exchange and strong connections between the two communities 🇯🇵🇦🇺.

Today, I had the privilege of visiting Cairns Regional Council to attend the Student Visit Program celebrating Cairns’ Sister City, Minami.

It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the strong and enduring friendship between Minami and Cairns — a special connection that has continued to grow over an incredible 57 years as Sister Cities. - Consul, Shingo Higashimoto

On Saturday, August 15th, the Cairns Bon Dance Festival was held at Fogarty Park.
It was wonderful to see such a great turnout, with local residents and visitors coming together to participate in the Bon dancing, enjoy the performances, experience the festival atmosphere, and of course, appreciate the spectacular fireworks finale.
A special thank you to the Tenshoren Awa Dance Team, who travelled all the way from Tokyo, Japan, to share their incredible performance with the Cairns community. Their energy and enthusiasm added something truly special to this year’s festival.
My sincere thanks to Mayor Amy Eden for her speech and for joining me in making mochi. We are incredibly grateful to the Cairns Regional Council for its continued support, and to the Queensland Police Service for helping to ensure the safety of everyone in attendance.
Finally, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Japanese Society of Cairns, the dedicated volunteers, performers, sponsors, and everyone who contributed their time and effort to making this wonderful event possible.
It was a pleasure to see the community come together once again to celebrate Japanese culture and friendship. – Consul, Shingo Higashimoto

On August 4th, I attended a meeting of Multicultural Leaders, organised by Centacare FNQ. In a workshop format, participants were provided with the opportunity to exchange ideas, communicate priorities, and engage in constructive debate.

I learnt a great deal from this experience and gained insight into the community enrichment activities and services delivered by Centacare.

The discussions also enhanced my understanding of the challenges faced by culturally diverse communities. Consul, Shingo Higashimoto

I was delighted to attend the opening event for the ‘Original Art from Japan’ exhibition on 27 July, and to say a few words.

The programme featured demonstrations of tea ceremony in both the Urasenke and Omotesenke traditions, as well as a beautiful musical performance that evoked the natural beauty of Japan through sound.

It was wonderful to see such a strong turnout for a Monday morning, including many Australians who clearly appreciated the Japanese art and music on offer.

The painting exhibition featuring the works of Mr. Shimamoto created a wonderful atmosphere, adding to the vibrancy of the event.

For the people of Cairns with an interest in Japan, it was a great opportunity to experience another dimension of the country's rich cultural heritage. - Consul, Shingo Higashimoto

On June 28, I attended a gathering organized by the Far North Queensland branch of the Australia-Japan Society (AJS) at a local Japanese restaurant.

The event brought together Australians from diverse backgrounds, for a fun filled evening of Japan themed trivia.

It was truly heartening to see so many young people participating, young people who will serve as a bridge for future exchange between Australia and Japan. Consul, Shingo Higashimoto

On June 23rd, I had the privilege of attending an event aimed at bolstering Japan's tourism industry engagement with Australia, while also serving as a training platform for the next generation of sales talents. I had the opportunity to sit down with Mr. Takei, Managing Director of JTB Australia, Mr. Endo, General Manager of the Overseas Group Travel Division, and — in what turned out to be a delightful coincidence — two sales staff members who share both the same name and the same surname: Ms. Miki Honda.
Together, we exchanged candid views on the realities and challenges facing the tourism industry today.

The event attracted a strong turnout from local tourism operators and hospitality businesses alike. Through informative sessions showcasing the tourism resources and travel products of Far North Queensland, along with lively networking activities, the young sales professionals in attendance came away with a much richer understanding of what Australian tourism has to offer. It was, in every sense, an initiative that has raised hopes and built momentum for bringing more Japanese visitors to this remarkable part of the world.

Consul, Shingo Higashimoto

I recently attended an event organised by Study Cairns, an organisation that plays an active role in supporting education-related businesses and international student engagement in the region.
It gave me a great opportunity to get a sense of the energy and momentum behind Indonesia-Australia educational exchange - something as a diplomat, I have had close connections to throughout much of my career.
I also had the chance to speak Indonesian for the first time in a while. It was a good reminder of Australia's importance as a nation deeply connected to and engaged with the Indo-Pacific.
