One hundred years ago, the Cairns community gathered to witness the consecration of the Cairns Cenotaph.

Last night, 100 years later, the community came together once again for its rededication ceremony.

For a century, the Cenotaph has stood as a sacred place where the people of Cairns gather to remember the service and sacrifice of those who have served our nation.

The commemorative service included an official rededication blessing by Chaplain Bolton of HMAS Cairns, an official address by Mr Nathan Shingles, President of the Cairns RSL Sub Branch, the laying of wreaths in memory of the fallen, and a moving sunset ceremony.

Thank you to Cairns Regional Council, HMAS Cairns, the Navy, Indigenous Development Program, the 51st Battalion FNQR and the Navy, Army and Airforce Cadets for their support in making this significant occasion so memorable.

Special mention to Sunbird Homecare for the Beautiful Commemorative Port.

Lest We Forget.

On this day in 1916, the Returned & Services League of Australia (RSL Australia) was established by veterans determined to support those who had served, and their families.

For 110 years, the RSL has stood for mateship, compassion, and service, advocating for the wellbeing of current and former Australian Defence Force members and preserving the spirit of service in our nation.

Today, we honour the legacy and ongoing mission of the RSL, and all those who have served Australia with dedication and courage.

The Cairns RSL Sub-Branch extends its deepest condolences and prayers to the families of the three British aviators who lost their lives during routine training exercises on June 3.

Defence personnel train rigorously to maintain the skills and readiness required to meet potential threats, both foreign and domestic. We honour the dedication and sacrifice of those who serve and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
