We also remember the fathers who can’t be with us today and cherish the memories of those who live on forever in our hearts.

Battle for Australia Day 🇦🇺

Today we remember the Australians who fought and sacrificed to defend our nation during the battles of the Pacific in WWII, including Kokoda, Milne Bay and the bombing of Darwin.

Lest we forget. 🌺

On the first Wednesday of September, we observe Battle for Australia Day. This day commemorates the battles fought against Japanese forces in the South and Southwest Pacific during World War II, including the bombing of Darwin, the Kokoda campaign, and the Battle of Milne Bay, to prevent an invasion of mainland Australia.

Of the more than 39,000 Australians who lost their lives in WWII, around 17,000 were killed in the Pacific theatre of war. Battle for Australia Day serves as a reminder to honour those who defended our nation and contributed to the defeat of Japan.

🌴 A Lovely Morning on the Esplanade! 🌴

What a beautiful morning! Thankfully, the rain stayed away, allowing us to enjoy a lovely walk along the Esplanade before heading back for a delicious BBQ breakfast. ☀️🥓

We finished the morning with birthday cupcakes to celebrate John and Tony! 🎂

🎉🎂 Happy Birthday, John & Tony! 🎂🎉

A very happy birthday to Cairns RSL Sub Branch Board Director John, who celebrated his birthday on Saturday, and our wonderful member and volunteer Tony, who celebrates his birthday today! 🥳

John and Tony are regular faces at our merchandise stall outside the RSL Club every second Tuesday, where they happily chat with members of the community and share information about the important work of the Cairns RSL Sub Branch.

And in true Tony fashion, even on his birthday he was at the stall today! What dedication!

We are incredibly grateful for the time, energy and commitment you both give to our Sub Branch and our veteran community.

Today we remember all those who served in Malayan Emergency and the Indonesian Confrontation.

Lest we forget

Today is Malaya and Borneo Veterans’ Day, when we commemorate the service and sacrifice of Australian military service personnel who served in the Malayan Emergency and the Indonesian Confrontation.

More than 7,000 Australian Defence Force personnel served in Malaya between 1950 and 1960, and then barely four years after the conflict ended, more than 3,000 Australians were called into action between 1964 and 1966 during the Indonesian Confrontation, which ended 60 years ago this year.

We remember all of those who served, and the 62 Australian lives lost during these conflicts.
