The Pyjama Foundation in Cairns Creating opportunities for children living in foster care through learning, life skills + confidence.

The Pyjama Foundation was founded in 2004 to give children in foster care the opportunity to change the direction of their lives with learning, life skills and confidence. Alarmed at the statistics highlighting poor literacy and numeracy levels of children in care, and how this contributes to a lifetime of disadvantage, founder Bronwyn Sheehan made a decision – a decision to offer hope and a more

positive outlook for these children. Through a simple program known as the ‘Love of Learning’ program, volunteers called Pyjama Angels are matched with a child in care, and spend just one hour a week focusing on learning based activities. Pyjama Angels read books aloud, play educational games, and help children with their homework. In that time, they demonstrate that this child is valued and loved. As much as the children adore their Pyjama Angels, so do the foster carers: generous people who give everything they can for these children. Children in care have the lowest education outcomes nationally. By improving their learning skills, The Pyjama Foundation is making a positive, life-long impact.

Being a Pyjama Angel in Cairns looks like many things! 💫

It’s supporting a young person in care with weekly visits that bring kindness, provide consistency, and inspire a love of learning. 💛

But… it’s also about becoming a part of something bigger!

As a Pyjama Angel (or one of our amazing supporters), you might find yourself:

🥞 Flipping pancakes like a pro chef
📚 Reading stories aloud to a tiny but captive audience
🧠 Straining your brain at a trivia night
🚶‍♀️ Getting your steps in at a fun run
🧁 Eating cupcakes in your pyjamas (we do most things in our PJs — except our visits 😄)
🎄 Wrapping gifts or baking festive treats … the list goes on!

Over the years, we’ve done it all to celebrate the young people in our program and bring awareness to the difference our volunteers make every single day! 🌟

If you’re looking for something truly meaningful to do with just one hour a week, we’d love to hear from you.

Our next recruitment training is coming up fast on Sunday, November 2 — we especially need Pyjama Angels to visit young people on the Southside of Cairns! 😇✨

NOT Cairns Coordinator Joeleen Bettini trying to smile through tear-filled eyes for this cheque presentation!!! 😭

It was both an honour and an overwhelming surprise to be presented with a staggering $9000 donation from the amazing local legends at Cairns Swap Meet, Car, Bike & Truck Show at yesterday’s Cars and Coffee gathering! 🚘

For over 20 years this event has been a much-loved fixture on the Cairns Calendar, but not many people realise it’s just a small team of passionate enthusiasts (and their families) who take on this mammoth undertaking each year!

On top of that, this committee so generously gives back to the local community, primarily supporting children’s charities with the proceeds of the event - which includes contributions from many people behind the scenes such as food vendors like Brain Freeze Slushy and Rotary Club of Cairns West.

Long-time supporters of our work, this is the largest single donation the team have presented to The Pyjama Foundation after an unbelievably successful event last month - despite the rain! 🌧️

🎁✨ Late last year, our hearts were full as we received a delivery of bright, colourful, and thoughtful gifts from the generous team and patrons at The Bluewater Trinity Park – all to be shared with our young people at our annual Christmas Party! 🎄💝

This is the second time this fantastic local venue has supported our children in recent years, and we are so grateful for their kindness. 💫

Acts of generosity like this, combined with an afternoon of fun with their carers and incredible Pyjama Angels, help bring joy and lasting memories to the wonderful children in our program. 💕👼

A huge thank you to the entire Bluewater team and the amazing Cairns community for standing beside us! 🌟🙌

Who is coming to our Stuffie Sleepover tomorrow? 🧸🛌

Come along in your comfiest pyjamas for a cozy morning of stories, songs, and smiles! We’re celebrating bedtime magic with a special visit from the Pyjama Angel, sharing the amazing work of The Pyjama Foundation in Cairns.

Kids can bring their favourite stuffed toy for an overnight library adventure! After storytime, your little one's will craft a mini bed and tuck their stuffie in for the night. While the kids head home… the toys will get up to all kinds of library mischief! 📚😴

Come back the next day to pick up your cuddly friend, along with cute pics and tales from their stay.

Worldwide VW Beetle Day – What a Ride! 🐞🌍

We braved the wind and a little rain ☔️💨 and soaked up the pockets of sunshine🌤️ to celebrate the IFYS Foster Care Worldwide VW Beetle Day with our amazing community today! 🚗🎉

From face painting and giant bubbles to mini golf, a petting zoo, Rotary sausage sizzle 🌭, coffee van ☕, and so much more — there was something for everyone!

We absolutely LOVED hosting the DIY bracelet making station 💫🎨 and seeing so many little ones express their creativity with big smiles and kind hearts 💕😊

Thank you to everyone who came along, helped out, and shared in the joy, laughter, and generosity. You made the day truly special! 🙌💛
