Last month, more of our team travelled to Cherbourg, a community with a deep and complex history. Today, Cherbourg is primarily home to people of the Wakka Wakka and Gubbi Gubbi Aboriginal language groups.

Experiencing the Ration Shed Museum tour was both powerful and deeply moving, leaving a lasting impression on those who attended.

One staff member reflected:

"Hearing the stories of the Domo boys and girls weighed heavily on my heart, yet I was deeply moved by the immense resilience they showed. The trip taught me a great deal about both the intended and unintended impacts of policy."

This was the Commission’s second visit to Cherbourg, and each visit continues to provide valuable insights that strengthen our understanding of history, culture and the ongoing impacts of policy.

We encourage other organisations to experience this important learning opportunity and book a tour through the Ration Shed Museum. https://ap1.hubs.ly/y0Ys7z0

Over recent weeks, Commissioner Ivan Frkovic has had the opportunity to connect with communities across a range of important events and initiatives.

From supporting Karakan’s Schizophrenia Awareness Week 2026, to hosting Hon Matt Doocey, New Zealand’s Minister for Mental Health at our office, and participating in the AddictionZ Conference 2026, these conversations continue to highlight the value of collaboration in improving mental health and wellbeing outcomes.

The 2026 Leading Reform Summit provided an opportunity to connect with stakeholders from across the sector, fostering conversations about innovation, partnership and the future of mental health and wellbeing in Queensland.

We were also pleased to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Queensland Transcultural Mental Health Centre, recognising three decades of supporting culturally responsive mental health care for Queensland’s diverse communities.

Thank you to everyone who continues to contribute their expertise, experience and commitment to building a mentally healthy Queensland.

This year’s National Reconciliation Week theme, “All In,” is a powerful reminder that reconciliation requires the commitment of all Australians, every day.

We began the week with a moving National Sorry Day address from Commission staff member Jermane Herbohn, Program Manager Social and Emotional Wellbeing, at the Leading Reform Summit, reflecting on the significance of truth-telling, healing and shared responsibility.

Earlier in the week, we were also honoured to receive a beautiful artwork inspired by our visit to Townsville last year, where we learned more about the innovative FASD Tracking Cube project delivered in partnership with Griffith University. Original artwork created by local youth Mikayla Peter.

These moments remind us that reconciliation is strengthened through listening, learning, building relationships and recognising the knowledge, cultures and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. As the week comes to a close, we encourage everyone to take these conversations beyond this week and turn reflection into meaningful action throughout the year.

Day 1 of the 2026 Leading Reform Summit is a wrap, and the conversations in that room today were ones that matter. 👏

From the opening Welcome to Country through to a live simulation of what it really takes to commission a mental health system under pressure, today was a reminder of why this Summit exists: because reform requires all of us, and it has to be built around the people it's meant to serve.

The Commissioner left us with this: "Reform requires collective action. It needs the momentum that comes from joining together, taking stock, listening carefully and asking whether our collective effort is focused on the outcomes that matter most to Queenslanders."

Tomorrow is the final day. We take everything we heard today and turn it into the commitments that carry us forward.

Joining us? Come ready to be challenged. If you're following along, watch this space.

A beautiful morning in Brisbane for day 1 of the 2026 Leading Reform Summit. What are you most looking forward to?
