Thanks to The Friends of the Caloundra Lighthouses for supporting The Big Dig, a Rotary project aimed at young children and their parents on Fathers Day Sept 6th

It's a pirate themed treasure hunt at Bulcock Beach

The photo of the Caloundra Lighthouse, courtesy Lyndon O'Grady from AMSA, the Australian Marine Safety Authority, was taken in the 1910s, and is the last image we have showing Bulcock's tower, constructed in the 1880s, to watch out for an expected Russian invasion. So, not much changes.

Fort Lytton, beside the Brisbane River was built to counter the same threat.

Of course, if it wasn't the Russians, the Americans and French were also sniffing around and we didn't much like them either

Thought you would like some images of post WW2 houses in Caloundra

The period following WW2 represents a social phenomenon. The hardships and rationing following the war were over, there was a population boom, full employment, people could afford holidays, they had cars, roads were improving. There was great optimism, (evidenced by the post war baby boom) and also a building boom, the biggest since the gold rushes.

One outlet for this energy was the continuing story of Australia’s love affair with the beach. Caloundra, due to its proximity to Brisbane, Ipswich & Toowoomba, was a key destination for holiday makers.

The style of building was markedly different from back at home - they were not permanent houses. Often simple beach shacks, but sometimes more elaborate, the common language was informality. It was the next step up from camping. All the ideas of prestige and creation of personal territory could be left at home.. But at the same time, you could have a bit of fun with the modern architecture, new materials and the bright colours of the day.

From the macro to the micro, watching Aura roll out from the Signal Station, Thanks Alissa for the souvenir spoon for our collection, and Barrie's model lighthouse, with a home for Bluey on the ground floor

What looks like a low hill at Aura is the Blackbutt hardwood plantation, planted among the former pine forestry. It was an experiment - they knew they would never be around to harvest it as eucalypts take 80 years to mature

This is the 1955 lighthouse, and the replica 1880 lighthouse (built 2012) and one of the original cottages.

The dolphins put on a nice show too

I think the one of Barrie is a classic and captures so much.

The one of the Cupola without the white is so vivid. Set against the sky such contrast.
