A great session at today’s Volunteer Leader Network Meeting.

We explored how a talent acquisition approach can strengthen volunteer recruitment and engagement, with practical insights from Kirsty James and Niamh McCarthy from the People, Culture and Development team at City of Boroondara.

Some key takeaways:

🔹 Storytelling is key
Volunteers sharing their experiences bring roles to life and give a clearer picture of what the role actually involves

🔹 Be clear on your unique proposition
What makes your organisation and roles stand out? Flexibility, culture, impact or learning opportunities all matter

🔹 Plan for the future
Think beyond current needs to the skills and roles you’ll need in 2–3 years

🔹 Involve volunteers in shaping roles
Co-designing role descriptions and messaging helps ensure they are realistic and engaging

🔹 Check what’s working
Review which channels are attracting the right volunteers and keep role ads current

🔹 Respond quickly
Timely follow-up keeps momentum and shows volunteers they’re valued

Lots of practical ideas and great discussion across the room.

📣 Reminder: Volunteer Leader Network Meeting – Tuesday 5 May

If your volunteer roles aren’t attracting the right people, it may come down to an unclear volunteer value proposition.

At our upcoming meeting, the People, Culture & Development team at City of Boroondara will share how they approach volunteer recruitment and engagement through a talent acquisition lens.

We’ll explore:
🔹 how to position roles so they stand out
🔹 clearly communicating your organisation’s value
🔹 moving beyond “post and hope” recruitment
🔹 strengths-based role matching
🔹 engaging diverse community groups

Come along to connect, share ideas and enjoy a cuppa ☕

🗓️ Tuesday 5 May | 8.30–10.30am

2026 is the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development, a reminder that much of what strengthens our communities happens in simple ways.

A friendly check-in.
Sharing skills to help others.
Time given freely.

Across City of Boroondara, volunteers contribute to social connection, wellbeing, and inclusive communities - often in ways that go unseen but make a difference.

During the Year of the Volunteer, we’re taking time to acknowledge and reflect on these contributions, and the people who make them possible.

Thank you to everyone who gives their time, care and commitment. 💚
