The River Murray International Dark Sky Reserve is an initiative of Mid Murray Landcare SA and is Australia's first Dark Sky Reserve. It covers more than 3,200 square kilometres from Bow Hill on the River Murray in the south, to Blanchetown in the north and west to the foothills of the Mt. The region is exceptionally dark, and readings above 21.9 are common. The area is known for its dry climate a

nd cloudless skies. Mid Murray Landcare SA worked closely with the Mid-Murray Council to establish the River Murray International Dark Sky Reserve, which received accreditation from the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) in November 2019.

📡 PROJECT NIGHTWATCH: BEHIND THE DATA 🌌☀️

What does a remote sky-quality station actually do?

As we prepare for our very first Project Nightwatch pathfinder station installation this September, we’re taking you behind the scenes of the technology helping us monitor and protect the night skies across the River Murray International Dark Sky Reserve.

Project Nightwatch is building a community-led network of automated, solar-powered, standalone sky-quality sensors across the Reserve. The stations will measure real-time night-sky brightness from local paddocks and send the data to our upcoming public Skycare Live Dashboard, where people will be able to access, track and learn from it.

Here’s what’s been happening behind the scenes:

📍 SITE VISITS & LOCAL PRIDE
Our tech team has been testing network signals across shortlisted properties to identify the most stable upload pipelines. Meeting landholders and seeing their pride in our region’s wildlife, habitat and dark skies has been a highlight of the project.

🖤 COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS
We’re joining forces with the skilled team at the Swan Reach Men’s Shed, who are custom-fabricating the heavy-duty steel solar mounting frames for the stations. Their ideas and experience are helping shape the project.

👁️ THE SCIENCE CORE
The Unihedron SQM-LE, our high-precision night-sky brightness photometer, is secured and ready for the project. It measures real-time night-sky brightness.

📡 THE GATEWAY
The Teltonika RUT906 is an industrial-grade 4G router that will handle the station’s connection to the cloud database, helping us keep the project’s night-sky data flowing.

We’re getting close to installation and going live. Follow along for more Project Nightwatch updates in September as we celebrate spring, our local landholders and the community working to protect our dark skies.

We are pulling back the curtain on PROJECT NIGHTWATCH all September long.

This month, our technical team is preparing to deploy the very first automated sky sensors across the region. Follow along to see how local landholders, tech innovators, and community legends are building Australia's premier real-time dark sky monitoring network.

Project NightWatch is a citizen science initiative of Mid Murray Landcare SA Inc. working closely with the Mid Murray Council and the Murraylands community, proudly funded by Inspiring South Australia.

🖤 Fact #9 (Our Galaxy Core): The glowing center of the Milky Way galaxy is perfectly visible from the Southern Hemisphere—and late winter is the absolute premier window to witness it directly overhead.

🖤 Fact #10 (Council Leadership): We walk the talk! All Mid Murray Council-owned streetlights across our 3,200 km² reserve have been successfully converted to fully Dark Sky compliant fixtures to stop wasteful light spill.

A massive, 99.8% illuminated Waning Gibbous moon will dominate the night, casting a gorgeous natural glow across the landscape. It is a fantastic weekend to wrap up warmly with the family, head out to the open country fields, and watch the peaceful region shine under the bright moonlight!

🪐 [Planetary Highlights]: Look West immediately after sunset! Venus is putting on a spectacular show with great visibility, shining as a brilliant "Evening Star" until it sets at 9:30 PM. Later in the evening, look East to catch Saturn rising at 8:47 PM with perfect visibility for telescope viewers.

[The Moonlit Mid Murray Show (7:16 PM Onwards)]: Celebrate the moonlight! Because this brilliant near-full moon rises early at 7:00 PM, it will already be climbing above the eastern horizon just as evening twilight wraps up at 7:16 PM. The twilight sky transitions seamlessly into a beautifully lit landscape. It is the perfect time for family walks or taking crisp nightscape photos of the rocky outcrops, old gum trees, and rolling hills glowing under the brilliant lunar light.

A massive shout-out to our fantastic friends at DWARFLAB, who generously donated 2 x DWARF Mini smart telescopes as raffle prizes for our community events back in June and August! 🌌🎁

We were absolutely thrilled to see both of these incredible prizes go to local community members. Smart telescopes are making deep-sky astrophotography portable, easy, and accessible for everyone—from backyard stargazers to local landholders.

True conservation doesn't stop at the ground—it goes all the way up to the stars. This week's fast facts show the massive scale of what we protect together across the Mid Murray:

🖤 Fact #7 (The Wildlife Shield): Artificial outdoor lights heavily disrupt the natural breeding cycles, plant pollination, and migration paths of regional birds, animals, and insects.

🖤 Fact #8 (Our Massive Footprint): To safeguard these ecosystems, our reserve covers a massive 3,200 km². This spans 14 local townships from Blanchetown down to Tungkillo and Wongulla.

Karlu Karlu (Devils Marbles) is now officially an International Dark Sky Sanctuary - the first in the Northern Territory and only the third in Australia 🌟

By day, the ancient granite boulders rise from the red earth of the Barkly. By night, with almost no light pollution, the milky way stretches across one of the Northern Territory’s most spectacular landscapes.
