This morning’s Dawn Service at The Gums was a moving and powerful reminder of the courage and sacrifice of the men and women who have served our nation. In the stillness of the early morning, our community gathered to honour those who fought, those who returned, and those who never came home.
On ANZAC Day, we reflect on the spirit of service, mateship and resilience that has shaped Australia for generations.
Today, I pay my deepest respects to my own family members who served and have since passed.
My great-grandfather, Matthew Eric Keogh, served with the Australian Imperial Force in World War I, taking part in the campaigns at Gallipoli, Egypt, and the Western Front.
My grandfather James Maurice Cope also served with honour in World War II during the bombing of Darwin, helping defend our country during one of its most challenging moments.
Both now rest peacefully in the cemetery at St George’s Church in Magill, and their service and sacrifice continue to guide and inspire our family.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
