Reconciliation Week is a reminder that reconciliation is shaped by our daily actions and shared commitment to creating meaningful change alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This year’s theme, "All In", calls on all Australians to actively contribute towards reconciliation every day, recognising that lasting progress is only possible when we each play a role in moving forward together.

As an organisation working alongside diverse communities, we recognise that reconciliation belongs to all Australians, regardless of where we were born, where we have come from, or how long we have called this country home. With that comes a collective responsibility to actively contribute to a more just, inclusive, and respectful future.

Our commitment to this shared journey includes continuing to listen and learn about the histories, cultures, and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, while standing in solidarity with First Nations voices and leadership. We also remain committed to helping foster greater understanding around truth, justice, and equity within the communities we serve.

Metro Assist acknowledge and pay our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders past, present, and emerging, and stand alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander colleagues, clients, and communities as we continue the ongoing work of reconciliation together.

For Youth Week 2026, Metro Assist hosted our 5th annual Future Pathways Expo in collaboration with the City of Canterbury Bankstown Council.

We welcomed over 300 young people from schools across the Canterbury Bankstown LGA to connect with universities, training providers, employers and community services to explore their future pathways and opportunities. It was amazing to see so many students and youth engaging with exhibitors, asking questions, building confidence and taking steps toward their future goals.

We were also honoured to have Mayor Bilal El-Hayek - City of Canterbury Bankstown attend and support the event, highlighting the importance of investing in young people and their futures.

"The program was very enjoyable, interactive, and well-structured, as the 2-day sessions had different topics and a lot of engaging physical activities for parents and children. We learned about the importance of healthy eating, exercise, sleep, and screen time."

Last week, Metro Assist & CABL’s community team partnered with our local Healthy Happy Schools - Sydney Local Health District’s team of superstars to host Move & Learn 4 Fun at PCYC Marrickville.

Kindly funded by the Inner West Council, our teams brought the energy for our interactive and engaging sessions. This featured group activities around food, lifestyle and sport, with the parent/child dodgeball session bringing some healthy competition!

The day was centred around connection, learning, and, most importantly, enjoying time together. Following each session, participants gathered to enjoy delicious food at the on site café, rounding out two fun-filled days for the whole family.

Stay tuned for our July school holiday sessions!

“I was previously fearful about attending court, but today’s visit helped me feel much more comfortable. I realised the experience was not as intimidating as I had imagined. Thank you to the Metro Assist team for making me feel supported and for guided experience.”

On 4 May, eligible Metro Assist SETS clients made a visit to the Bankstown Courthouse. Our team met with the staff before the proceedings for a short information session, which provided an overview of the types of cases heard at the court, the roles of staff present during hearings, and the rules and expectations to follow during the visit.

The group then split into two groups to attend separate court hearings, then came together for a Q&A session facilitated by the staff. This gave participants the opportunity to ask questions and further develop their understanding about the court system.

Canterbury-Bankstown came alive on Wednesday 29 April as we hosted our very first Community Connect Day at the Bryan Brown Theatre & Paul Keating Park. With more than 250 attendees and 30+ service providers and local organisations involved, the day was filled with connection, energy, and a strong sense of belonging.

Highlights from the day included:

- A meaningful smoking ceremony to open the event

- Insightful presentations from Metro Assist, TAFE NSW, the City of Canterbury Bankstown Council, STARTTS, and Multicultural NSW

- A vibrant clients bazaar showcasing the talents, culture, and entrepreneurial spirit of new arrivals

- Activities for children including chess, LEGO, face painting and henna for mums

- High-energy Zumba sessions and cultural performances celebrating the diversity of the community

Proudly led by Metro Assist, with the support of TAFE NSW and the Canterbury-Bankstown Council, the day reflected a shared commitment to walk alongside newcomers, create opportunities and an inclusive community where diversity is valued and celebrated.

This is just the beginning, with Community Connect Day set to become an annual event that continues to build connection, inclusion, and shared futures.
