Our CEO Nina Shahi and Settlement team was delighted to attend the 2026 FECCA National Conference in Canberra, alongside multicultural leaders, settlement professionals, policymakers and advocates from across Australia.

Under the theme “Navigating Change, Shaping Australia: Many Stories, One Future”, conference sessions covered social cohesion, identity, cultural inclusion and the contributions migrants make to Australia’s social and economic prosperity.

We were privileged to hear from the -General of Australia, Her Excellency Ms Sam Mostyn AC, Minister Anthony Albanese, and the Hon. Dr Aly MP, Minister for Small Business, Multicultural Affairs and International Development.

As an organisation, the conversations among presenters and attendees reinforced our commitment to building stronger communities and strengthening social cohesion across diverse communities, and to responding to division with mutual respect, understanding and connection rather than further division.

Our team has returned with stronger partnerships and new ideas to share with the communities we support. For the past 40 years, through our settlement services, we have worked with migrants and humanitarian entrants to build connections, access opportunities and participate fully in Australian society.

We remain committed to supporting newly arrived communities and working towards an inclusive Australia where everyone can thrive.

Thank you to Prerana Mehta and the FECCA team for bringing together such a diverse group of voices.

Stepwise Community Services was delighted to attend the Inner West Barbecue for Multiculturalism, organised by Inner West Council on Sunday 18 October. It was a wonderful day celebrating the rich cultural diversity that makes Australia such a welcoming and unique place to call home. The event brought people together in the true spirit of community through colourful cultural performances, inspiring speeches and children’s entertainment.

It was great to see local organisations, leaders, sporting clubs and community groups connecting and strengthening partnerships. The speeches touched on multiculturalism, respect, inclusion and the values we share, while the performances celebrated the many cultures, traditions and stories that make up our Australian identity.

Our Settlement team was proud to host an information stall, engage with community members, share information about our services and build meaningful connections with individuals and families.

At Stepwise Community Services, we believe multiculturalism is one of Australia's greatest strengths. Our diversity enriches our communities, broadens our perspectives and reminds us that, despite our different backgrounds, languages and traditions, we all share a common desire for belonging, opportunity and a better future.

Our commitment is to continue fostering an inclusive community where everyone feels welcomed, respected, valued and empowered to thrive, regardless of their cultural background.

A special thank you to Inner West Council for organising this fantastic celebration, and to Cslr. Darcy Byrne, Mayor of the Inner West, Jason Yat-sen Li MP, Member for Strathfield and Sally Sitou MP, Member for Reid, alongside all the community organisations, sporting clubs, performers, families and volunteers who helped make the day memorable.

Last Friday, 17 clients of the Arabic community participated in an informative tour of Bankstown Hospital. The tour included visits to the Emergency Department and the Imaging Department, providing participants with valuable insights into the services available within the hospital.

Attendees also received general information about hospital recruitment processes and guidance on how to explore employment opportunities within the government sector.

The session was highly beneficial, helping participants gain a better understanding of the healthcare system, available services, and potential career pathways. We thank Hospital for hosting this informative and engaging experience for our community.

Building healthy relationships starts with us.

Thank you to everyone who attended our Healthy Relationships workshop last Friday at the invitation of KATINI House ( Indonesia - NSW).

Together, we explored how a positive relationship with ourselves lays the groundwork for healthy relationships with others. We discussed how to nurture our relationship with ourselves, how to recognise abusive relationships and seek support for them, and how to set healthy boundaries. We also looked at how building self-esteem and self-worth helps us become more resilient and confident.

Everyone deserves to feel safe, respected and valued in their relationships. By building self-awareness, confidence and resilience, we can take positive steps towards healthier relationships and stronger communities.

A big thank you to KATINI House for inviting our team and creating this valuable opportunity to share knowledge, encourage meaningful conversations and promote healthy relationships.

Our financial counsellors work alongside people experiencing financial hardship of any kind, whether that's gambling-related debt, everyday bills, or keeping up with rent or mortgage repayments.

In 2023, a mother of three going through mental health struggles and domestic violence desperately needed various financial supports for herself and her children. Having trouble sleeping each night from the stress, she required NDIS support for her child, a safe place to live and raise her children, and a strategy going forward for debt. She was close to giving up hope on a way forward.

Then she met Stepwise. To help get the mother of three back on track, Stepwise’s family and financial inclusion services team including a financial counsellor, psychologist, and one of our caseworkers, helped our client understand her options and supported her to act on them.

After five visits to Stepwise, she is debt-free, sleeping well, receiving NDIS support for her child, and much more. Our client feels understood and now sees a way forward.

If you are curious about free, confidential support to help you take back control of your finances, find out more about Stepwise financial counselling on our website.
