Keep bird baths clean to help protect bird health.

Bird baths can attract wild birds and other animals, so it's important to keep them clean to reduce the risk of spreading H5 bird flu.

These simple steps can help prevent the spread of H5 bird flu:
• Regularly clean and disinfect bird baths and any other water containers you may use.
• Refresh water often and keep it clean.
• Wash your hands after handling these items.

If you see multiple sick or dead birds, Avoid contact, Record what you see and Report it to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

Keep dogs leashed near wildlife, keep cats contained, and ensure pet food and water can’t be accessed by wild birds.

💙 Canberra is lighting up blue for biosecurity.

For one night only on Monday 24 August, national landmarks across the capital will glow blue to mark National Biosecurity Week 2026.

The illumination is a reminder that biosecurity is everyone's responsibility. From declaring goods when you travel, to reporting unusual pests or diseases – small actions can make a big difference!

🐒 A big welcome to Perth Zoo's newest arrivals!

Five endangered ring-tailed lemurs, Anita, Charmaine, Willow, Damayanthi and Ronnell, have officially settled into their new home in Western Australia after travelling from Hamilton Zoo in New Zealand.

Their arrival is the result of much planning and cooperation between Perth Zoo, Hamilton Zoo, New Zealand's Ministry for Primary Industries and DAFF. Together, teams worked to support the animals' welfare and ensure all biosecurity requirements were met before the lemurs could begin their next chapter in Australia.

Following their arrival, the inquisitive newcomers spent time in quarantine getting familiar with their surroundings, from investigating enrichment activities to tucking into fresh fruit and vegetables. 🍎🌿

Now out of quarantine, they're busy exploring their new habitat and charming keepers and visitors alike with their playful personalities and distinctive striped tails.

With ring-tailed lemurs facing ongoing threats in the wild, including habitat loss, hunting and the illegal pet trade, conservation partnerships like this play an important role in helping safeguard the species' future.

We're proud to support initiatives that contribute to global conservation while maintaining the strong biosecurity systems that protect Australia's environment, agriculture and unique biodiversity.

National Biosecurity Week is just around the corner, offering a timely reminder of the critical importance biosecurity plays in our everyday lives. It protects our environment, food supply, communities, and jobs - but everyone needs to play their part.

A great example of biosecurity in action took place recently, when a householder spotted tiny insects in a pack of imported nappies and reported it. This simple act helped protect Australia from one of our top unwanted pests.

You can hear more about this and other important information about biosecurity from Australia's three biosecurity chiefs as they share why biosecurity matters and how together we can protect what we value.
