“We learn every day from the US and UK. We are the only country in the world to acquire and build nuclear-powered submarines without an existing civilian nuclear ecosystem. This really is a national end-to-end capability that is unprecedented globally.”

ASA Director-General, Vice Admiral Jonathan Mead speaking at around the importance of our trilateral partnerships under 🇦🇺🇬🇧🇺🇸

VADM Mead was joined by Sir Chris Gardner, UK Submarine Delivery Group 🇬🇧, and Charles Taylor, Naval Reactors 🇺🇸, who both highlighted how the AUKUS partnership is accelerating learning across all three nations and building a truly integrated submarine enterprise.

Today marks 112 years since the arrival of Australia's first submarines 🇦🇺⚓

Arriving in Sydney after a remarkable 13,000-nautical-mile voyage from England, HMAS AE2 and her sister submarine AE1 marked the beginning of Australia’s submarine capability.

The journey was extraordinary for its time. Spanning 83 days, with 60 days spent at sea, it remains the longest submarine transit completed at that point in history. Under the command of Lieutenant Henry H.G.D. Stoker (pictured), AE2 was crewed by a combined Royal Navy and Royal Australian Navy team 🇬🇧 🇦🇺

Constructed by Vickers-Armstrong at Barrow-in-Furness, AE2 would go on to make history in the First World War on , becoming the first Allied warship in more than 800 years to reach the Sea of Marmara after breaching the Dardanelles.

Today we reflect on this defining chapter in Australia’s submarine history and the legacy it created. From those first crews to today’s workforce, their innovation, resilience and partnership continue to shape Australia’s strength below the surface.

From lawn mowers to 🇦🇺 🇺🇸 🛠️

Congratulations to Century Engineering Pty Ltd for becoming the first South Australian company qualified through the Australian Submarine Supplier Qualification ( ) Program to receive a purchase order from the United States.

Through AUSSQ, Century Engineering has received its first purchase order from Newport News Shipbuilding (a division of HII) for cranks, which form part of the blast deflector system (pictured below) on U.S. Navy Aircraft Carriers ⚓🛫

Employing 190 skilled workers, Century Engineering has been delivering complex and technical engineering solutions for over 75 years. The company, which once produced engines for Victa lawn mowers, has evolved from supporting whitegoods and automotive manufacturing to defence projects, including Adelaide-built Hobart-class air warfare destroyers, Collins-class submarines and Hunter-class frigates.

AUSSQ is helping local companies like Century Engineering join the supply chain by becoming approved suppliers to HII, the largest military shipbuilder in the US and one of two companies that builds US nuclear-powered submarines. The Australian Government has invested a total of nearly $40 million in the AUSSQ program, with 13 Australian companies already achieving supplier qualifications through the program.

H&B Defence—a HII and Babcock Australia & New Zealand joint venture—is delivering the AUSSQ program, with their early focus being on Australian businesses delivering castings and forgings, and precision machining.

Great to connect with WA locals at HMAS Stirling over the weekend ⚓🇦🇺 as we helped celebrate 125 years of the Royal Australian Navy.

HMAS Stirling is the home of Australia’s fleet and will be central to Australia’s future nuclear-powered submarine capability. Around $8 billion being invested over the next decade to expand the base, create jobs and support the local economy.

Saturday was a chance to recognise the people, the place and the community at the heart of this national endeavour, and the vital role HMAS Stirling will continue to play in supporting regional stability and prosperity. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello 👋
