Today, four Molonglo members departed Canberra as part of a larger Australian contingent heading to the United States to assist with the major wildfire response across North America.

They join two other Molonglo members who were sent on earlier deployments. One of those members is currently operational in Canada, while the other is serving in the US.

A huge thank you to all of our members who have stepped up to deploy, and an extra special thank you to the families holding down the fort at home during these five-week rotations. Your support behind the scenes is invaluable.

While several of our crew are serving overseas, the Molonglo Brigade remains fully active and response-ready. Our local operations, regular training, and community education programs continue as normal to protect our community.

When wildfire activity increases, the global wildfire community comes together.

Over the coming days, we're pleased to welcome 42 personnel from Australia and New Zealand to British Columbia to support wildfire response.

The deployment includes experienced Incident Management Team personnel, aviation specialists and other wildfire professionals who will integrate with our response efforts to support operations across the province.

These personnel are arriving through a long-standing international mutual aid partnership coordinated by the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC), which allows countries to support one another when wildfire activity exceeds local capacity. While we are receiving assistance now, our personnel have also deployed internationally in previous seasons when support was needed elsewhere.

Wildfire response doesn't stop at borders. It is built on cooperation, shared expertise and a commitment to helping one another when it matters most.

A huge thank you to our colleagues from Australia and New Zealand for answering the call. We look forward to working alongside you in British Columbia.

Lukas is a founding member of Molonglo, and one of our most dedicated members.

Both he and Simon are some of the most experienced, qualified and respected firefighters that the ACT is fortunate to be able to call on both locally and send abroad.

Experiences like are an opportunity not just for our members to contribute their skills and times to other communities in need; but also gather experience, knowledge and learnings that they can bring home to share with others or implement when our own community needs them.

Travel well, make good decisions and we'll see you in a couple of months. 🚒🔥🇦🇺

As wildfires continue to impact communities across the United States, ACT Rural Fire Service volunteers Lukas and Simon have headed overseas, as part of a supporting Australian deployment.

For Simon, it is his fifth international deployment, having previously assisted in Canada and the United States. He will take on a safety officer role, helping incident management teams identify and manage risks to keep firefighters safe.

Despite being away from home for more than a month, Simon says supporting international partners is an important part his role: “We’re trained, we’re experienced and we’ve got these skills so it’s good to be able to use them. We know that we’re going to call on the US and Canada at some stage to travel down here and help us.”

Lukas is heading to the United States for the first time, after three previous deployments to Canada. He will work as a division supervisor, helping coordinate crews and operations on the fireground.

For Lukas, the deployment is an opportunity to learn from different firefighting environments and bring that knowledge back home. “It’s a good opportunity to see how other people do firefighting and it’s great to be able to represent the ACT. Our Territory punches well above its weight for both interstate and international deployments.”

The pair say firefighters around the world share a common goal: helping communities and working together when it matters most.

Travelling with five firefighters from ACT Parks and Conservation Service, Lukas and Simon will join more than 70 colleagues from across Australia going over to help in the US.

💨 Residents in the area should be mindful of any wind changes that may bring smoke any surrounding suburbs.

🚗 If you're travelling through the area, please be aware of emergency vehicles and workers in the area.

Landfill Tip Fire - Pialligo

A large landfill tip fire is burning on the site of Canberra Construction Recyclers, off Pialligo Avenue in Piallgio.

The fire is under control and is being extinguished, but a significant plume of smoke is in the air as a result of this fire, and is moving in a south easterly direction.

ACT Fire & Rescue and the ACT Rural Fire Service are on scene.

Individuals with respiratory conditions, or those affected by smoke, are advised to remain indoors and close windows until conditions improve.
