📰 The Courier Mail's Editor has seen enough too.

Yesterday we told you about Brian Currie. Stabbed two police officers with a syringe, one in the neck at Redcliffe Watch House.

Violently assaulted three officers in total. Sentenced to 3.5 years against a maximum of 14. Eligible for parole before he even begins serving time for attacking our officers.

Today, the Courier Mail editorial called it out directly. Police officers deserve to be protected by legislation that acts as a proper deterrent against those who want to harm them on the job.

We’ve been saying this for years. Now Queensland’s largest newspaper is saying it too.

Western Australia introduced mandatory sentencing for assaults on police in 2009. Assaults dropped by more than a third in the four years that followed. The evidence is not in dispute.

The Crisafulli Government prides itself on being tough on crime. The Courier Mail says our call for mandatory minimum sentences is “worthy of further investigation.”

I'd go further than that. It’s worthy of urgent action.

People like Brian Currie and Liam Sing is exactly why. Our officers go to work expecting they might be assaulted. What they should also be able to expect is that the justice system has their back. Right now, it doesn’t.

Queenslanders deserve better. Our officers deserve better.

Yesterday, the community came together to witness the unveiling of a statue honouring Victoria Cross recipient Private Richard Norden VC — a lasting tribute to an extraordinary Australian whose courage and service extended far beyond the battlefield.

During the Battle of Coral/Balmoral in Vietnam in 1968, Private Norden displayed incredible bravery under intense enemy fire, repeatedly risking his own life to rescue wounded comrades. His actions would later see him posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, Australia’s highest military honour.

Following his military service, Richard Norden continued his commitment to protecting the community through a career as a police officer, dedicating his life to service both in uniform overseas and here at home.

Yesterday’s unveiling was a powerful reminder of sacrifice, courage, and duty — and of a man whose legacy continues to inspire generations of Australians.

💙 We will remember

Victoria Cross recipient private Richard Norden has been immortalised at a ceremony in New South Wales with his statue and memorial unveiled in Gundagai. He was posthumously awarded the VC two years ago for an act of bravery in Vietnam in 1968.

“It has been one year since we lost Lyn under the most tragic circumstances. Her absence is still deeply felt across the Nelson community and our police whānau. Our hearts go out especially to Lyn’s family today, and to all of her colleagues. She was a deeply loved member of our police family and always will be.” — New Zealand Police Association president Steve Watt.

* * *

Today we remember Senior Sergeant Lyn Fleming, who died after being struck early on 1 January 2025, when a vehicle was driven at speed into several police officers who were on foot patrol in central Nelson, injuring three of them.

Senior Sergeant Fleming (62) died less than 12 hours later – becoming New Zealand’s first female police officer killed in the line of duty and the first officer in Nelson. Her colleague, Senior Sergeant Adam Ramsay, was seriously injured and another officer was concussed.

Lyn’s policing career of more than 38 years began in 1986 as a traffic officer in Auckland. She moved across to Police in 1992 alongside her husband, Bryn, when the organisations merged, and the couple soon moved to Nelson.

Lyn spent 32 years on the frontline in Nelson, moving up the ranks – to sergeant in 2003 and senior sergeant 10 years later – and working in a variety of roles including district operations and deployment, and as the tactical group supervisor. She spent the past 7œ years as Nelson Bays area response manager, responsible for all the PST, custodial and front counter staff in Nelson.

Her supervisors’ comments throughout her career showed she had the highest levels of integrity and professionalism. Lyn was a leader who inspired confidence and cared deeply about her team. She did so much for so many people, and leaves an enduring legacy and example for us all to follow.

Our thoughts today are with Lyn’s family – her husband Bryn; children, Rayna and Aren; parents, Ray and Colleen; and siblings, Woody, Carol, and Jo – as well as her friends and colleagues who continue to grieve. Thank you for your service, Lyn. You will always be remembered.
