🌏 Yesterday we marked World Environment Day, recognising the importance of collective action to address climate change.

For Cambodia scholar Chanchealin Pheap, environmental challenges are deeply personal.

“I have witnessed how flooding, water pollution, and poor sanitation can directly affect communities, public health and the environment.”

Currently studying a Master of Environment and Sustainability at Monash University, Chanchealin has expanded her perspective beyond technical solutions: “I have come to realize that environmental challenges cannot be solved through technology alone but require systems thinking, collaboration, and understanding how environmental, social, and economic issues are deeply interconnected.”

Through her work and experience, she has seen how climate change particularly impacts vulnerable communities and highlights the need for leadership, stronger governance and more women in STEM.

Her call to action is clear: “Sustainability must move beyond discussion and become practical action within communities.”

After her studies, Chanchealin plans to return to Cambodia to promote climate-resilient WASH solutions, strengthen environmental policy, and empower more young people, especially women, to lead change.

How can ecosystem management help build a more climate-resilient future?

For Australia Awards scholar Jyoti Ghimire, studying a Master of Ecosystem Management and Conservation at , it is about responding to some of the most urgent environmental challenges facing Nepal.

“Following my deep interest in understanding how ecological processes function, and how they can be sustainably managed in a changing environment, I decided to study this degree through an Australia Awards Scholarship.”

Communities across Nepal depend on forests, water systems and biodiversity for their livelihoods, yet climate change is placing increasing pressure on these essential resources. From floods and landslides to drought and biodiversity loss, the impacts are being felt across social, economic and ecological systems.

“One of the biggest challenges is balancing environmental conservation with increasing human demand and climatic impacts.”

Through her studies, Jyoti is gaining the scientific knowledge and practical skills needed to support sustainable ecosystem management and environmental decision-making.

“I believe investing in healthy ecosystem function today is critical for building a more climate-resilient future.”

Looking ahead, Jyoti plans to return to Nepal and apply her learning to strengthen conservation efforts, support sustainable land management, and enhance community resilience.

🌏 This World Environment Day, we are proud to support scholars contributing to climate solutions that benefit their communities and countries.

Ahead of World Environment Day, Australia Awards scholar Shahil Ram from Fiji shares his perspective on climate action and its impact on Pacific communities.
“Climate action can’t wait; safeguarding our environment today ensures a better tomorrow.”

Studying a Master of Environmental Management at The University of Queensland, Shahil was also awarded a Rob Tranter Fellowship for his academic excellence to support his on-award experience.

“Hailing from Sigatoka, Fiji, I have witnessed firsthand how climate change, coastal erosion, flooding and environmental degradation affect communities.” For Fiji, the impacts are already being felt, including rising sea levels, intensified cyclones and coastal flooding, reinforcing the importance of effective environmental management.

Through his studies, Shahil aims to strengthen “evidence-based decision-making” and help develop sustainable solutions to bolster Fiji’s resilience against climate change.

🚨🚨 ONLINE EVENT 🚨🚨

Join us on Tuesday, 9 June 2026 for a panel discussion on Leadership, Culture and Policy: Rethinking Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) in the Pacific.

Across the region, governments have made commitments to SRHR through national health, gender, and development policies, as well as through regional and global frameworks.

However, SRHR in the Pacific is not only shaped by policy, but by culture and leadership. Traditional values, faith institutions, and community structures continue to provide protection and belonging for many people, yet silence around sensitive issues can also contribute to stigma, exclusion, and unmet needs.

This webinar will bring together Pacific scholars, policy experts, and practitioners to examine the evolving SRHR landscape in the Pacific through the lenses of leadership, culture and policy.

📅 Date: Tuesday 9 June 2026
🕐 Time: 12.00pm – 2.00pm (AEST)

Building connections beyond the classroom 🎓🏉

At La Trobe University, Australia Awards scholars recently joined Study Abroad students for an AFL clinic at the Tony Sheehan Oval, offering a unique opportunity to experience one of Australia’s most iconic sports.

For many participants, it was their first time playing AFL. Through hands-on activities, students learned the basics while connecting in a relaxed and inclusive environment.

“It was such a fun experience to learn AFL for the first time. I really enjoyed meeting other students and trying something new together- it made me feel more connected to the La Trobe community.”

The clinic highlights the importance of fostering wellbeing, cultural exchange, and community to support students build friendships and networks that extend beyond their studies.

This National Reconciliation Week, the theme All In calls on all Australians to commit to reconciliation every day through action, responsibility, and meaningful change.

For Australia Awards scholar Wildan Mohammad Hadjri from Indonesia, this message resonates deeply: “National Reconciliation Week feels like an important reminder that acknowledging historical injustice goes beyond symbolism. It is actually foundational to building societies that are genuinely inclusive.”

Wildan’s journey began with a student project exploring Indigenous fashion and art, where he and his peers “really threw ourselves into the research… and even went to the Yabun Festival to connect with the culture firsthand.” That experience inspired him to continue learning and supporting Indigenous communities.

Today, Wildan contributes as Executive Secretary at the Indigenous Education Foundation, supporting education and community programs across Indonesia and Australia.

Reflecting on this year’s theme, he shares: “‘All In’ resonates with me because reconciliation isn't something you opt into occasionally. It has to show up in everyday choices, institutions, and relationships.” Through small but meaningful actions, including supporting Indigenous artists, Wildan reminds us that reconciliation is everyone’s responsibility.

Smita Gupta, an Australia Awards alumna from India, is pioneering the use of artificial intelligence to improve access to justice by bridging legal systems with emerging technologies.

Her leadership journey, strengthened through an Australia Awards Regional Short Course on Women in Executive Leadership Development, has enabled her to deploy AI tools across Indian courts to reduce case backlogs and design inclusive solutions for citizens. She has also co‑led initiatives such as Jugalbandi and Jagrit, creating multilingual, voice‑enabled platforms that empower marginalised communities, particularly women, to access legal information and government schemes.

She says: “As a young woman in legal tech, I strive to lead by example, using my voice and leadership to advance changes that uplift women and underrepresented communities.”

Looking to gain hands-on experience during your scholarship?

Australia Awards Africa scholar Dorothy Cumbulane from Mozambique shows how part-time and casual work can enrich both your studies and your impact.

Since arriving in Australia, Dorothy has taken on a casual role as a Student Support Officer at a special education centre in Adelaide. This work aligns closely with her passion for inclusive education. Alongside her studies, she has also launched a community initiative in Mozambique through an Australia Awards small grant, demonstrating how practical experience and academic learning can go hand in hand.

“Being a Student Support Officer has had a significant positive impact on me both personally and professionally… I have developed practical skills such as communication, patience, adaptability and teamwork,” she says.

Dorothy encourages other scholars to take a proactive approach:

✅Speak to university career hubs and student services.
✅ Connect with lecturers, classmates and peers.
✅ Reach out to organisations aligned with your interests.
✅ Be confident in expressing your willingness to learn.

Her casual role allows her to balance work with her studies while gaining valuable insight into inclusive education systems that she will take back to Mozambique.

“Scholars should not hesitate to take the initiative… demonstrating a genuine willingness to learn can make a strong impression.”

Dorothy’s journey is a reminder that part-time roles are not just about income but can strengthen your skills, expand your networks, and deepen your impact when you return home.
