Tuberculosis (TB) is a bacterial infection that typically affects the lungs and spreads through the air. It remains one of the world’s deadliest infectious diseases, claiming around 1.3 million lives every year.

TB is a preventable and treatable disease in Australia, with around 5 to 6 cases per 100,000 population, however some communities are more affected.

We have a new national strategic plan to reduce TB transmission and improve health equity for everyone affected by TB.

The new plan focuses on:
✅ building on existing TB programs
✅ reducing inequities in TB outcomes, particularly for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

📢 Grant round now open!

Are you looking to improve hepatitis B or C outcomes in Australia. Our new grant opportunity could help support your work! 💛

Applications are now open for national, viral hepatitis community-led projects and awareness campaigns.

We’re looking to fund projects that help:
🧪 prevent, test, diagnose and treat viral hepatitis
💬 improve understanding and awareness
🤝 reduce stigma and discrimination
🌏 improve access to culturally safe and appropriate care
🙌 support community-led approaches
💪 strengthen coordination, partnerships and workforce skills.

The grants will engage priority populations and help eliminate hepatitis B and C as public health challenges in Australia by 2030.

Applications close 2:00 pm AEST, 28 September 2026.

🎤 This week our Director-General, Professor Zoe Wainer, joined Tiahni Adamson and Dr Tiggy Grillo AM at the Australian Parliament House for a panel discussion on pandemic preparedness and prevention.

Hosted by Wildlife Health Australia, the event brought together key decision-makers and stakeholders to discuss how stronger shared One Health systems can help us be ready for and recover from emerging health threats.

🌏🐾 This event couldn't have come at a better time, with zoonoses - diseases that can spread from animals to people - making up 60% of emerging infectious diseases globally, and around 75% of emerging human illnesses in the last 30 years originating in animals.

No single organisation, sector or country can address these risks alone.

Collaboration across human, animal and environmental health is essential to protecting communities in Australia and across our region. 🤝

As we respond to H5 bird flu, we understand Australians are concerned about our unique wildlife.

We are working to reduce other threats to our at-risk wildlife, like feral cats and weeds.

These efforts will give our native species the best chance at withstanding the potential impacts of H5 bird flu.

Are you eligible for an mpox vaccination?

Mpox is a viral infection and it’s circulating across Australia – anyone who comes into contact with the virus can get it.

Infection can be painful and while most people get better, it can take weeks. The best protection? Vaccination!

You may be eligible for an mpox vaccination if you think you’ve been exposed in the last 14 days, or if you’re at greater risk of coming into contact with Mpox because you:
🎟️ attend events with intimate or skin-to-skin contact
💗 have s*x with multiple people
🏠 live with or have close contact with someone who has mpox
✈️ travel to areas where mpox is circulating
🧪 work with orthopoxviruses in a lab
🩺 are a health professional treating someone with mpox or handling contaminated items.

Help protect yourself and prevent the spread to others.

H5 bird flu has the potential to spread further and continue impacting wildlife. We are prioritising surveillance and early detection to help protect agriculture and communities, and to minimise impacts on our native species.

The further spread of H5 bird flu among some wild seabirds is concerning, but not unexpected.

There are no detections in poultry or our agricultural production system and the risk to humans remains low.
