Our 6MIP space scientists have blasted off into their latest mission - exploring every planet in our solar system! After diving into their research, students teamed up to shrink the enormous distances between each planet and the Sun so they could map out a whole mini solar system right on our community oval!

Year 2 Maths, students are learning addition and subtraction through hands-on activities and visual models using materials like MAB blocks as well as drawings, to help them understand how numbers work. This approach supports students in problem-solving skills and explaining their thinking.

In literacy, story boxes helped students organise and understand stories by breaking them into simple parts like beginning, middle, and end. They support reading comprehension and guide students in planning and writing their own structured stories.

I was very proud to see our Year 6 students participate in the Rostrum speech presentations held in the hall on Friday 15 May. All students confidently presented their speeches in front of peers from 6P and 6B during the semi-finals, demonstrating excellent preparation, effort and a willingness to challenge themselves. Congratulations to Monica and Caytlyn, who progressed through to the school finals. We also congratulate Wednesday, who will represent our school in the ACT Primary Schools Speaking Competition, and Eliza, who has been selected as the reserve finalist.
This week, students began their new Mathematics unit on measurement, with a focus on length and converting between units of measurement. Using a range of hands-on materials, students explored millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres, developing their understanding through practical activities and real-world examples.

In year 4, students have been developing their confidence and fluency with multiplication facts while exploring a range of strategies to solve problems efficiently. We have been using the Concrete, Representational and Abstract (CRA) model to deepen students’ understanding of mathematical concepts. Through hands-on materials, visual representations and written number sentences, students have been learning how multiplication and division are connected and applying this knowledge to solve problems in different ways. They have also been investigating the properties of odd and even numbers, identifying patterns and using mathematical reasoning to explain their thinking.

In the Small Group Program, we have been exploring the question ‘How can Autumn inspire us?’ in our artmaking.

We have been creating artworks using the colours and leaves of the season.

To recreate a worm’s eye view of Autumn trees, we used broccoli florets and mixed the colours of red and yellow to make these masterpieces.

Well done to our Awesome Mawson Artists! Ms O’Meara- Arts Specialist

This term, our class has been excited to begin our soccer clinics. We have been very fortunate to have a group of student volunteers sharing their skills and helping to run the clinics. Thank you to Karun, Eric, Jai, Amy, Takumi and Logan for their leadership and enthusiasm during these sessions.

Our Year 5 and 6 students also participated in the Rostrum speech presentations held in the hall on Friday 15th May. Students confidently presented their speeches as finalists were selected for the next stage of the competition. Congratulations to Karun and Jai, who made it through to the school finals. We would also like to congratulate Wednesday who will be representing our school in the ACT Primary Schools Speaking Competition and Eliza who is the reserve finalist.

We are very proud of all students for their confidence, effort and willingness to participate in these opportunities.

In maths in SGP1, the students have been learning about sorting and patterns. The students first learned about different attributes such as size, shape, colour and number and how these can be used to help them sort items according to a rule. After sorting, the students had to explain the reason (rule) for how they sorted their items. The students then learned that a pattern is something that repeats and follows as rule. The students were given a range of opportunities to copy, continue and create their own patterns using different attributes.

In the library, kindergarteners are exploring the wonderful world of Julia Donaldson. Years 1 and 2 are discovering the excellent early readers that our library has to offer. Years 3 and 4 are enjoying the Little People, Big Dreams books. Years 5 and 6 continue to visit the library regularly to borrow and play chess.

In Kindergarten, students are continuing to explore family diversity and identify significant people in their own lives. We have been reading and discussing how different family units may look different while still sharing similarities. Students have also looked at pictures of different families and created their own family glyph, using colours to represent each family member in their home.

We have also been using a world map to explore where we were born and to see the different places our families come from. To support their learning, students have tasked their parents with homework by choosing a question to ask, helping them learn more about their own family background.
