Yesterday, on the 14th of June, the 85th anniversary of Soviet deportations from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, Ambassador Jaan Reinhold and deputy Kristjan Kuurme participated in commemorations organized by the Baltic communities in Sydney and Canberra, respectively.
On this solemn day, alongside colleagues from Latvia and Lithuania, we remembered the tens of thousands of innocent people who were forcibly deported from their homes in June 1941. Families were torn apart, lives were lost, and entire nations were left deeply scarred. It is a tragedy that continues to resonate across generations, with very few families untouched by its impact.
The commemorations in both Sydney and Canberra were a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience of our communities abroad. Through shared remembrance, we honour the victims, preserve the truth of what happened, and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that such injustices are never forgotten.
We will also continue working to ensure Russia gets their day in court for its atrocities in Ukraine - including the deportations of children - in a way they were never held accountable for the events of 1941 and 1945-1953.
We are grateful to the Baltic communities in Australia for keeping this history alive and for standing together in solidarity.
