Upon returning to Canberra from the Annual Meeting of Heads of Mission held in Finland, Ambassador Arto Haapea's first call of duty was signing of books of condolence at the Embassies of two important countries for Finland:
🇳🇵 In Nepal, we are witnessing an undescribable scale of devastation and loss of lives, but also the heroic efforts of search and rescue workers.

Introducing new colleague, Pihla Rusanen! 🇫🇮✨

💡Can you tell us about yourself?
Hi! I’m Pihla, and I’ve just started as an intern at the Embassy of Finland in Canberra. I’m currently studying Industrial Engineering and Management at Aalto University, after completing my Bachelor’s degree in Information Networks.

🦘 What was your first impression of Australia?
My first impression of Australia has been great – and Canberra has definitely surprised me in the best way! I didn’t expect a capital city to be quite this green. I’m already looking forward to exploring the city and going on lots of hikes during my time here. I’m also happy to report that I haven’t seen a single spider yet, and I’m hoping to keep it that way!

🌏 What are you looking forward to over your time here?
With my engineering background, I’m particularly interested in learning more about the role of technology and innovation in international cooperation. I’m also looking forward to getting to know the Embassy’s work, meeting new people and exploring more of Australia. I’ve already had such a warm welcome, and I’m excited for everything the coming months will bring!

Over the past two weeks, Ambassador Arto Haapea has been in Finland for a programme of industry visits, stakeholder engagement, and the annual Ambassador’s Conference.

Travelling across the country together with Finnish colleagues and Heads of Mission from Tokyo, Seoul and Taipei, the Ambassador has met with leading Finnish companies and organisations to discuss opportunities and trends across the Asia-Pacific region. Highlights included visits to Nokia’s new R&D and manufacturing campus in Oulu, CSC and the LUMI supercomputer in Kajaani, Terrafame’s operations in Sotkamo, and roundtable discussions hosted by the Confederation of Finnish Industries (EK) and BusinessOulu.

The programme concluded in Helsinki with Finland’s annual Ambassadors’ Conference, bringing together representatives from Finland’s global diplomatic network, political leaders, business representatives and experts to discuss foreign and security policy, economic resilience, AI and the changing international environment. In these moments of geopolitical change, these exchanges help ensure Finland’s diplomatic network remains connected, informed and ready to continue advancing Finnish interests around the world. 🇫🇮🇦🇺

Brilliant discussions with the next generation of leaders! 🌍

🇪🇺 As part of a Model EU programme hosted by the Canberra EU delegation, Finnish Second Secretary Sara Saramäki joined fellow diplomats from Belgium, Poland and Sweden to answer students' questions about careers in and around the EU, the importance of soft skills such as negotiation, cultural awareness and adaptability, and how young people can help strengthen EU-Australia relations.

From patience and listening in negotiations to making a real-world impact, the conversation highlighted the many paths into and day-to-day work in diplomacy. One lesson stood out: words matter. Diplomatic statements can be just as influential as more tangible actions in advancing foreign policy goals.

🇫🇮🇦🇺 ✈️ The Finnish Air Force was honoured to have its representatives observing, for the first time ever, exercise Pitch Black 2026 in Northern Australia. The visit provided a valuable opportunity learn more about how fourth- and fifth-generation fighter jet capability is integrated into a large multi-national exercise. Thank you Australia and the Royal Australian Air Force for the warm hospitality and excellent cooperation.
