📢 Complete our NCC user survey and share your views!

We're seeking feedback to better understand how the National Construction Code (NCC) is used and where improvements could be made.

Whether you use the NCC regularly or occasionally, we'd like to hear how you access, navigate and apply the NCC in practice.

Your feedback will help inform future improvements to NCC products, services and resources.

The survey is open until 6 September 2026.

Access the survey via our consultation hub: https://consultation.abcb.gov.au/ncc-user-survey

📢A new ‘Embodied carbon handbook’, developed in collaboration with NABERS, is now available.

There are currently no embodied carbon requirements in the NCC. The handbook is voluntary guidance and is not required for NCC compliance.

It provides information for practitioners who choose to consider embodied carbon outcomes in their projects.

🔍 We've noticed that stairs is a top search topic among our website visitors! To help you out, we have highlighted some key areas of the NCC and the Housing Provisions that relate to this topic.

Various requirements about stairs are found throughout Section D of NCC Volume One, including:

• when a stairway must be fire-isolated (Part D2),
• construction requirements (Part D3)
• features for stairs provided for people with a disability (Part D4).

To see Section D in full, visit: https://ncc.abcb.gov.au/editions/ncc-2022/adopted/volume-one/d-access-and-egress/part-d1-access-and-egress

Part 11.2.2 of the Housing Provisions covers stairway construction. This part specifies dimensions for stairways and includes diagrams to help provide further clarification.
