🟡 What influences pedestrian safety behaviour?

A new study - published in the Australasian College of Road Safety Journal of Road Safety - from Bengaluru, India, examined the links between awareness, attitudes, and pedestrian actions.

Three key findings:
🚶 Awareness of traffic rules and pedestrian safety is linked to safer behaviour.
🎓 Students and younger pedestrians reported higher levels of violation behaviours.
🛣️ Behavioural and infrastructure improvements could help create safer environments for people walking.

The findings reinforce the value of Safe System thinking, where education, road design, and supportive environments work together to reduce road trauma.

A new study published in the Australasian College of Road Safety Journal of Road Safety has found that visible monitoring and enforcement can dramatically improve driver behaviour at school crossings.

Researchers observed more than 1,600 pedestrian-vehicle interactions and found:
✅ Driver yielding increased from 24.9% to 71.7% when speed display signs, CCTV and police enforcement were combined.
✅ Average approach speeds dropped from 37.5 km/h to 28.3 km/h.
✅ Higher vehicle speeds made drivers significantly less likely to stop for pedestrians.

The findings show that practical, low-cost measures can help create safer environments for children crossing roads near schools.

🤔 Did you know that road safety can be affected by how well our laws, road design standards and vehicle regulations align?

New research published in the Australasian College of Road Safety Journal of Road Safety explores how inconsistencies between these systems can create confusion for road users and reduce the effectiveness of self-explaining roads.

Key findings:
🔹 Better alignment between road user behaviour laws, road design standards and vehicle regulations can improve road safety.
🔹 Some pedestrian crossings, bicycle lanes and cycling infrastructure may not always align with the legal definitions used in road rules.
🔹 Practical tools such as cross-referencing systems, standardised terminology and interpretive guides could help prevent future misalignment.

The study calls for a review of existing laws and stronger connections between road design, vehicle standards and road rules to support safer outcomes for all road users.
