On Saturday, 12 September, one lucky visitor will have the chance to strike the first coin featuring our special ACT bluebell privy mark.

After that, the privy mark will be available to press at the Mint for just four weeks during Floriade About Town.

Rum Fact Friday!

Rum was used as a form of currency when coins were in short supply.

The famous ‘Rum Hospital’ in Sydney was even built through a deal involving 45,000 gallons of rum. Its southern wing would later become the Sydney Mint – where Australia’s first gold sovereigns were struck.

You can see this piece of our early currency story for yourself in our museum, with this historic rum bottle displayed right beside one of Australia’s first coins – the Holey Dollar.

This coin captured a moment of pure joy.

Released in 2005, it features the iconic "Dancing Man", one of the best-known images of the celebrations at the end of the Second World War.

His brief (eight second) appearance, captured on film in George Street, between King Street and Martin Place on 15 August 1945, has been replayed countless times and encapsulates the spontaneity of emotion throughout the nation on that day.
