Today is the first day of the new school year in Ukraine. And today, Russia attacked Ukrainian cities once again.

For many Ukrainian children, war has been part of everyday life for as long as they can remember. Children now transitioning from primary school to secondary school have never lived and studied without the realities of Russia’s full-scale war: air raid alarms and the need to hurry to shelters, blackouts, and disrupted lessons.

Yet, despite everything, Ukrainian children keep learning, growing, playing, and dreaming. Teachers keep helping children discover the world, gain knowledge, and believe in themselves. Schools remain places where Ukrainian kids can learn, make friends and look towards a future beyond war.

Education in Ukraine does not stop – and neither does Ukraine’s belief in its children and their future.

Russia continues to reject genuine peace efforts and escalate its attacks against Ukraine, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has stressed.

He called for stronger stronger support for Ukraine’s air defence and energy resilience ahead of winter and increased pressure on Moscow, including sanctions targeting Russia’s ballistic production, the full use of immobilised Russian assets, and the swift adoption of the US Sanctioning Russia Act.

“Ukraine is ready to end the war, grounded in the reality on the battlefield and fair terms rather than ultimatums. President Zelenskyy is prepared to meet without preconditions at a neutral location to find realistic solutions, stop the killing, and shift to diplomacy. However, Putin continues to hide from such a meeting.

We urge our partners to abandon wishful thinking regarding his real intentions: he continues to reject fair proposals for peace,” Andrii Sybiha has said.

Remembering those who gave their lives for Ukraine is part of our lives.

Today is the Day of Remembrance for Ukraine’s fallen defenders – a day that reminds us of the huge price of freedom. But remembrance lives through many more ways – in the way we speak their names, honour them in our cities, and pass their stories on to others.

Kyiv faced 13 separate air raid alerts on 27 August.

Again and again throughout the day, sirens sounded as Russia launched drones in small groups towards the Ukrainian capital. Each new threat put people at risk and forced them to seek safety – while repeatedly interrupting work, public services, transport, and everyday plans.

In total, Kyiv spent 872 minutes – almost 15 hours – under air raid alert that day.

For regions closer to the frontline, even longer alerts are an everyday reality. But what Kyiv experienced on 27 August shows another way Russia is using its weapons to disrupt civilian life: repeated drone launches keeping a city of millions under threat throughout the day.

This is what Russia's decision to prolong its war looks like.

While Moscow talks about diplomacy, it continues investing in missiles and expanding its capacity to wage war. Russia's readiness for peace must be judged not by its words, but by what it does – and Russia continues to choose terror and war.

Peace requires actions – and enough pressure to make Russia stop its war.

Woof-woof to our best friends!

🦮🐶 On International Dog Day, we honour every four-legged rescuer who saves Ukrainians from under the rubble after Russian shelling. Every brave creature who helps demine Ukrainian land. Every fluffy comrade on duty with our defenders.

Not all dogs are heroes – yet we love them all. Ukrainians keep evacuating pets from the frontline, adopting stray dogs, hiding in bomb shelters together. On their part, service dogs support our military and civilians during physical and mental rehabilitation.

🇺🇦🇳🇿 Ukraine’s 35th Independence Day was also celebrated in New Zealand

On 22 August, the Ukrainian community in Wellington gathered with New Zealand friends and representatives of the diplomatic community to mark the 35th anniversary of the restoration of Ukraine’s independence.

The event, organised by the Ukrainian Gromada of Wellington, brought together ambassadors and diplomats representing Ukraine’s international partners, as well as members of the Ukrainian community and clergy.

Among those addressing the gathering were Keith Smith, High Commissioner of Canada to New Zealand; Patryk Blaszczak, Ambassador of Poland to New Zealand; and Zuzanna Bieniuk, Deputy Head of Mission of the EU Delegation to New Zealand.

The community also welcomed Fr Andriy Mykytyuk of the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of Sts Peter & Paul, who travelled from Australia and offered a prayer for Ukraine.

The programme featured Ukrainian music and dance, the photography exhibition “Light in the Darkness of War”, and a screening of the film “Soldier”.

We thank the Ukrainian Gromada of Wellington, its Head Olga Vorobey, all organisers, participants and friends of Ukraine for bringing Ukrainians and our partners together to celebrate Ukraine’s independence thousands of kilometres from home.

🇺🇦 Celebrating Ukraine’s 35th Independence Day in Canberra and Sydney

On 23–24 August, Ambassador of Ukraine to Australia Vasyl Myroshnychenko joined Ukrainian communities and friends of Ukraine in Canberra and Sydney to mark the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence.

In Canberra, Ambassador Myroshnychenko took part in a rally organised by Friends of Ukraine, alongside members of the Ukrainian community, friends of Ukraine and Ambassador of Lithuania to Australia Donatas Butkus.

In Sydney, the Ambassador joined Independence Day celebrations organised by the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations and the Ukrainian Council of NSW - ОУГ НПВ at North Bondi RSL Club.

Among the guests was Ukrainian Armed Forces officer Victoria Savkiv, who shared her powerful personal story of joining Ukraine’s Defence Forces at the age of 21 and of defending her country over the past four years.

The event also welcomed Australian band Breathe, whose members recently travelled to Ukraine to perform at the Atlas Festival in Kyiv and at a concert in Lviv - another meaningful example of solidarity between Australians and Ukrainians.

We are grateful to Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Matt Thistlethwaite MP, NSW State MP Robyn Preston, and the many Australian friends of Ukraine who joined the celebrations.

The proclamation of independence in 1991 was not the beginning of Ukraine’s statehood, but the culmination of a centuries – long history and a long struggle to regain a sovereign state.

Across different periods of history, from the times of Rus to the Cossack Hetmanate and the Ukrainian People’s Republic, people here had various forms of statehood and governance. In 1991, Ukraine restored its independence after decades of Soviet rule – a return to the independent Ukrainian state, declared by the Ukrainian People’s Republic over 100 years ago.

Words matter – they shape how history is understood. Saying that Ukraine restored its independence, rather than was born in 1991, recognises this longer historical continuity and the role of generations of Ukrainians who helped shape the country as it is today.
